"DEPUTY LIEUTENANTS OF MALTA".

 

Appointments to these nominally, vice-regal offices were limited to six members of the Maltese Nobility for whom the yearly appointments were first created by Governor Thomas MAITLAND.

The six offices were abolished in 1839 and the powers merged with those of the local magistrates of police.
