The Family of Caxaro

in 1492, the Alhambra decree by the Catholic Monarchs of Spain forced all Jews and Muslims to leave Castile and Aragon (Sicily and Malta being a part of it), or convert. Many chose to convert. To avoid the mounting societal and financial pressure imposed, they often married into local families or even the elite. As marriages back then were based on benefit to each family (A Converso Merchant family marrying into an Old Christian family). The Jews of Malta highlights Rafael Ketib was baptised as Nicolas Caxaro, and took the name of his sponsor (Also a Caxaro).
