Welcome message from the President of The Committee of Privileges of the Maltese Nobility
I extend a heartfelt welcome to all participants at the forthcoming CILANE congress to be held in Malta later this year. This fills us with pride, despite our relatively recent membership of such a distinguished body.
Malta has been well renowned throughout the ages in greeting innumerable visitors to the country, starting with St Paul, each endowing it with its individual imprint which has determined our identity through such a rich ethnic and cultural intermix. Melita, the Roman appellation of our country, derived from the Latin name for honey, evokes images of melliferous products and warm-hearted people, which have never changed throughout the years.
In consequence of our geographical location, which has been a watershed for cultural and political expression in the central Mediterranean, our country has been enriched by these influences, foremost among which has been the foundation of a Maltese nobility (MG link: www.saidvassallo.com/SME/maltesenobility/nobility/ancientprivileges.html ) in acknowledgement of our tangible contribution to the kingdoms and principalities that governed us.
The initial noble families (MG link: www.saidvassallo.com/SME/maltesenobility/oldfamilies1647.htm
www.saidvassallo.com/SME/maltesenobility/Melita/maltesenobility1725.htm ) were established in the fourteenth century by the kingdom of Aragon through its vassal monarchs, the Kings of Sicily and Naples (MG link: www.saidvassallo.com/SME/maltesenobility/nobility/royalbenefices.html ). Later, bestowal of ennoblement reached its apogee during the governance of the Sovereign Military and Hospitaller Order of St John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta, (MG link: www.saidvassallo.com/SME/SME2/Translationofthedeed.html ) in recognition of services provided by these respective families to the Order (MG link: www.saidvassallo.com/SME/maltesenobility/nobility/Archivesofordervol627.html www.saidvassallo.com/SME/maltesenobility/precedence.htm ). The thirty-two titles (MG link: www.saidvassallo.com/SME/maltesenobility/importanceofnobilty.htm ) that constitute the Maltese nobility were ratified in the House of Lords of the British Crown at the time of its rule over our islands (MG link: www.saidvassallo.com/SME/maltesenobility1878.htm www.saidvassallo.com/SME/maltesenobility/nobility/Table9.html ). These titles, though buffeted by republican sentiments, still survive intact after all these years. Our families (MG link: www.saidvassallo.com/SME/maltesenobility/tableofgrantees.htm ) all truly welcome our European counterparts in a spirit of hospitality and friendship. I augur a successful debate of the European Nobility in an ever-changing world, which hopefully enough should underpin an improved potential for the future.
“Merhba” – the Maltese word for “Welcome” – still resounds throughout the ages as an expression of sincere conviviality to whoever visits our shores.
