From the "London Gazette" of 12 June
1756 (issue 9591, page 2):- |
'The
King has been pleased to grant unto the Right Honourable Stephen Lord
Ilchester and |
Stavordale, Baron of Woodsford Strangways in
the County of Dorset, and of Redlynch in the |
County of Somerset, and his Heirs Male, and in
Default of such Issue, to his Brother the Right |
Honourable Henry Fox, and his Heirs Male, the
Dignity of an Earl of the Kingdom of Great Britain, |

by the Name, Stile and Title of Earl of

Henry Thomas Fox-Strangways, 2nd Earl of
Ilchester |
According to a romantic tale, in the early
1770s the 1st Earl of Ilchester received a letter from |
a gentleman named Standish O'Grady who lived
with his daughter at Cappercullin, county |
Limerick in Ireland. The letter respectfully
requested that the Earl arrange for his son and heir, |
Henry Thomas Fox-Strangways, known by the
courtesy title of Lord Stavordale, and whose |
regiment
(the 24th Regiment of Foot) was stationed near to O'Grady's house, to be
transferred |
to another part of the country. |
Mr. O'Grady stated in his letter that Lord
Stavordale was paying a great deal of attention to his |
daughter,
and expressed his concerns that, because Lord Stavordale was a member of
the |
aristocracy and his daughter was a mere
commoner, they would never be allowed to marry, and |
that,
as a result, his daughter's happiness would suffer if the hopeless love
affair was allowed |
to progress any further. |
In reply, Lord Ilchester wrote that he was very
grateful for the timely warning of the state of |
affairs, and that he had requested an old
friend of his, named Colonel Prendergast, to |
call
upon Mr. O'Grady to personally convey his thanks. When Colonel Prendergast
arrived, he |
and
O'Grady got on so well that the Colonel was asked to stay for a week, during
which period |
the Colonel spent a large amount of time with
O'Grady's daughter. |
At
the end of the week, when the time came to leave, the Colonel told O'Grady
that his |
daughter
did not appear to be well, to which O'Grady replied that she was still pining
for Lord |
Stavordale.
The Colonel then informed O'Grady that he was totally confident that Lord
Ilchester |
would
be proud to have O'Grady's daughter as his daughter-in-law, and that he would
tell him |
so.
O'Grady begged the Colonel to say nothing to the Earl, but the Colonel
insisted that the |
Earl would be pleased to welcome the daughter
into his family. Finally, when O'Grady asked why |
he was so confident, the Colonel replied,
"Because I am Lord Ilchester." |
Lord
Stavordale and Mary Theresa O'Grady were married on 26 August 1772. The
marriage |
produced two sons and six daughters. When the
1st Earl of Ilchester died in 1776, and was |
succeeded by his son, Mary O'Grady became the
Countess of Ilchester until her death on |
14 June 1790. |

Richard
Martin Herbert Peake (7 Aug 1953-19 Jul 1975), son and heir of the |
2nd Viscount Ingleby |
Peake fell to his death from a cliff in July
1975. The following report of the subsequent inquest |
appeared in 'The Times' of 25 July 1975:- |
'A
coroner recorded an open verdict yesterday on Mr. Richard Peake, aged 21, son
of Lord |
Ingleby, who fell to his death at Beachy Head,
Sussex. |
'Mr. John Dodd, the East Sussex coroner, said:
"I must be satisfied beyond all reasonable doubt |
when
a person's life ends in this way before I bring in a verdict of
suicide." He said it was |
probable Mr. Peake had not realised that he was
so near the edge of the cliffs. |
'Mr. Anthony Watkins, aged 26, a friend, said
he clung to Mr. Peake to try to prevent him from |
falling over the edge. "He then grabbed my
wrist and said 'OK, chum, you are coming with me.' |
I held for an instant and then I let go."
Mr. Watkins said Mr. Peake slid about a foot and then |
went straight down. |
'In reply to a question from the coroner, he
said: "No, there is no question of a leap." |
'Mr.
Watkins told the coroner earlier that the Wednesday before Mr. Peake's death
he had |
brought
his friend away from Poole General Hospital, Dorset, after he had tried to
cut his wrist |
and throat. He also said Mr. Peake had spoken
of past suicide attempts.' |
As
a result of this death, the Viscountcy of Ingleby became extinct on the death
of the 2nd |
Viscount. |
