in Chief at Madras, died after being mauled by a tiger. A month later, his counterpart in Bombay, Sir John Hudson, was
killed when he was thrown from his horse. The following account appeared in "The Cheltenham Chronicle" of 17 June 1893:-
"Lieutenant-General Sir John Hudson, Commander-in-Chief in Bombay, was thrown from his horse on Friday morning at
Poona and killed. A later telegram says General Hudson, in company with Colonel Leach, was trotting gently down the road
past the Ghoriporie barracks, when his pony stumbled badly, throwing the General on his head. He turned right over and
never stirred again. Colonel Leach immediately dismounted, and ran to his side, but he at once perceived that life was
extinct, and it was subsequently ascertained that the General had fractured the base of his skull, and that death must
have been instantaneous. Some soldiers, who were passing at the time, carried the body to the barracks close by, and it
was conveyed thence in the deceased's own carriage to Magdalo House. A deep gloom has been cast over the presidency
by the sad event, and all the Government offices closed. Major-General Blundell, one of the first-class district commanders,
assumes the chief command provisionally.
"The deceased officer was the eldest son of the later Captain J. Hudson, R.A., and was born in 1833. He was educated at
the Royal Naval School, New Cross, and entered the army in 1853. In 1861 he was transferred to the Bengal Staff Corps.
He became captain in 1858, major in 1864, lieutenant-colonel in 1870, colonel in 1877, major-general in 1887, and
lieutenant-general in 1892. He served as adjutant of the 64th Regiment in the Persian campaign in 1856-7. He also went
through the Indian Mutiny Campaign, including the relief of Lucknow. In the Abyssinian campaign he served as second in
command of the 21st Bengal Native Infantry, and took part in the Afghan campaigns of 1878-9 and 1879-80. In 1884-85
he served in the Soudan, and subsequently held various important commands in India. He was made a C.B. in 1881 and
K.C.B. in 1885. He married, in 1859, Isabel Marie, daughter of the late Major-General Charles Frederick Havelock."
Sir Alan John Hunter  [KCVO 1937]
Sir Alan committed suicide in March 1942. The result of the subsequent inquest into his death appeared in the Dundee
"Evening Telegraph and Post" on 9 March 1942:-
"A verdict of suicide while the balance of his mind was disturbed was returned at the Woking, Surrey, inquest on Major-
General Sir Alan John Hunter, D.S.O., who was found shot in the office of the National Rifle Association at Bisley Camp on
Thursday.
"Sir Alan, who was secretary of the Association, was director of prisoners of war at the War Office from June, 1940 to
September, 1941. He was aged 60.
"Among riflemen he was known as "the man who saved Bisley." In 1939, it seemed that the annual Bisley meeting would be
cancelled because of military training, he persuaded the authorities to proceed with a curtailed meeting. A week's shooting
was substituted for the usual fortnight.
"Evidence of identification was given by a son, Captain John Hunter, of the Royal Artillery. Captain Hunter said that his
father was working in London all through the worst air raids of last winter.
"Lady Joan Hunter said that last Thursday morning her husband was in very good spirits. "He returned home about two
o'clock and looked rather disturbed and strange. I told him lunch was ready. He went out of the room without saying any-
thing and without taking his lunch."
"At about 2.30 p.m. she went to her husband's office and found him crouched on the floor with a wound in his head.
"Lady Hunter said that Sir Alan Hunter was in the last war for four and a half years. He went straight on to a job in the
War Office and had had big appointments ever since and never gave in. He worked at high pressure, and along with that
had the worry of his sons, who are fighting. One is in Libya and one in Burma.
"The Coroner - This seems to indicate more or less a nervous breakdown? - Yes.
"P.C. Harold Staples said that a rifle found beside General Hunter had a discharged cartridge case in the breach. On the
desk he found a letter addressed to Lady Hunter. The coroner recorded a verdict of suicide while the balance of the mind
was disturbed. He said that the cause of Sir Alan's death was a rifle bullet wound in the head."
Sir Edward Thomas Henry Hutton  [KCMG 1901 and KCB 1912]
Hutton is often regarded as the father of the Australian army. His biography appeared in the June 1964 issue of the
Australian monthly magazine "Parade":-

'In September 1882, a revolutionary Egyptian army under Arabi Pasha [1841-1911] was strongly entrenched at
Tel-el-Kebir, north-east of Cairo. A peasant, who had risen to be Minister of War, Arabi was staging a last attempt to
seize power and make himself master of Lower Egypt and the Suez Canal. With his position astride the Sweetwater Canal
and the railway to Port Said secure, Arabi had no doubt that with his army of about 100,000, he could hold any attack by
the opposing British force of 14,000.
'On the night of September 12 the British, who were concentrated six miles south of Arabi's force, prepared their attack.
Under cover of darkness a party reconnoitred the stretch of desert separating the forces. Taking observations by the stars
and making sure it was unobserved, the party erected white guide posts almost up to the Egyptian front line. An hour
later the British commander, General Sir Archibald Alison [2nd baronet], a one-armed veteran of the Indian Mutiny,
launched the assault. It was led by the 42nd Black Watch under the general's aide-de-camp, Capt. Edward Hutton.
Ordered not to fire until they had carried the first line of trenches, the Highlanders moved forward in grim silence. Arabi's
men knew nothing of the advance until the British were less than 200 yards away. Suddenly an Egyptian sentry saw the
silhouettes of the enemy in the darkness. He gave the alarm. The first shot killed Hutton's horse. Jumping from the dead
animal he drew his sword and with a blood-chilling Highland screech, led his men in the charge. Hutton was the first of the
finest troops in the British Army into the Egyptian trenches. And on the night the Black Watch was supported by a brigade
of hard-hitting Indians. The surprise was complete. After 40 minutes of bitter hand-to-hand fighting the Egyptian horde
panicked and fled. The pasha himself raced to Cairo where, after failing to persuade his supporters to burn the city, he
surrendered to the British. Arabi spent the rest of his life exiled in Ceylon [actually the next 19 years - he was allowed to
return to Egypt in 1901].
'The part played by Hutton in the victory of Tel-el-Kebir greatly advanced his career. General Sir Edward Hutton went
down in history as the founder of the Commonwealth military forces and the first man to command Australian troops in the
field. Born in England in 1848 and educated at Eton, "Curly" Hutton joined the 60th Rifles as an ensign and was posted to
India. Although the disaster of the Crimean War had shaken public confidence in the administration of the British Army,
social background was still necessary to win commissions. Hutton took his profession seriously, an attitude that was
distrusted by many of his brother officers who were more interested in polo, pigsticking and social activities than in military
science. Nor did his concern for the men in the ranks endear him to the top brass, who became irritated at his constant
attempts to improve the conditions of the rank and file. When someone said the battle of Waterloo was won on the playing
fields of Eton, Hutton replied that a lot of battles since then had been lost in the officers' mess.

'Despite his frequent collisions with authority and his annoying habit of usually being right, Hutton was soon promoted
captain and sent to the staff college at Camberley. In 1879 he served in the Zulu War, where he took an active part in
rounding up the dignified but murderous King Cetewayo. Cetewayo had made himself master of the country by slaughtering
his brother Mbuyazi and several thousands of his followers, at the battle of the Tugela River [2 December 1856]. So fond
was the Zulu potentate of washing his spears, as he termed it, that he threatened to exterminate the entire Boer
population of the Transvaal.
'Although some political leaders in England were in favour of letting the Boers fight their own battle, the British took a hand
just in time to prevent a catastrophe. During the campaign, which ended in the capture of Cetewayo, Hutton learned the
lesson that in a country like South Africa mobile troops were vastly superior to infantry. Although the Zulus fought on
foot, they carried nothing but their arms and lived off the land. As a result they had little difficulty eluding the heavily-
laden British foot-sloggers whom they contemptuously termed "pack oxen." The campaign cost so many lives that Hutton
became a strong advocate of mounted infantry and during the first Boer War put his principles into practice by forming a
squadron of light horse.

'Fresh opportunities for advancement came Hutton's way during the Egyptian campaign and later in the Sudan when he
organised and commanded the Camel Corps. [Although not mentioned in the article, he also made a very advantageous
marriage, to Eleanor Mary Paulet, niece of both the Marquess of Winchester and of Field Marshal Lord William Paulet.] By
the time he returned to England as a lieutenant-colonel, he had so demonstrated the importance of mobile riflemen that
he was ordered to raise and train an entire division of mounted infantry.

'Hutton's preoccupation with mounted troops was considered an expensive fad by many high-ranking officers. These men
still pinned their faith to the "thin red line" of past wars and regarded the horse as being useful simply to pull guns or save
the legs of senior officers. Cavalrymen, who possessed what Hutton called the "Light Brigade outlook," scoffed at his idea
of providing infantry with horses to ride to the scene of action. However Hutton stuck to his tactic although the idea of
riding to battle was highly unpopular even with many of the rank and file. One infantry sergeant positively refused to
transfer to a mounted detachment. "What's your objection?" asked Hutton impatiently. "Are you frightened to learn to
ride?" "It's not that, sir," said the sergeant earnestly, "but I know where I am when I'm on my own feet. If there's a
retreat, I don't want to be handicapped by a horse."

'In 1893 Australians had their first glimpse of the man who was to make so deep an impact on the military history of
[Australia]. Dissatisfied with the defence system of the colony, the Government of NSW asked the British authorities for
loan of an officer to reorganise it. Hutton, now a major-general, was given the job. He found the NSW army in poor shape.
Apart from the permanent artillery and a few small technical units, the troops were all Saturday afternoon volunteers and
many of the officers were only half trained. Promotion was often a matter of political influence. On a higher level there
were frequent arguments about seniority and precedence. Once two colonels, city businessmen in private life, claimed the
right to command the entire army. The dispute which culminated in the exchange of offensive letters, was settled only
when the governor, as commanderin-chief, threatened to cashier them both.

'A short-tempered man, Hutton was not easy to get on with and quickly raised a storm when he declared that the city
volunteers were useless. Another howl of protest went up when, having stated that the NSW bushmen were the finest
mounted infantry material he had seen, he added that, as expert horse thieves, they would be able to provide their own
remounts. His advocacy of federation for defence was hotly criticised in some quarters, especially when he ironically asked
if Victoria intended to remain neutral if NSW were attacked. Despite such gaffes the peppery major-general wore down
press and political opposition. In three years he rid the NSW army of most of its comic opera elements and turned it into a
small but effective force.
'From Australia Hutton went to Canada, where the military situation was far worse that it had ever been in NSW. During
the South African war Hutton commanded a mounted force of 7000 men which included most of the Australians engaged
in the campaign. He was one of the few commanders to come through the South African war with an enhanced reputation.
The men who served under him claimed that they were not defeated or even checked throughout the campaign. His
success was due to his mastery of cavalry tactics and the speed at which his column moved. As one Australian trooper
put it: "Some of the generals spend a couple of weeks finding out the enemy's position. By the time they're ready to
attack, he's gone. But our bloke hits first and finds out his position afterwards."

'Although he was knighted for his services in South Africa, Hutton's greatest work was yet to come. It was done in
Australia during the first decade of the century, when at the request of the newly formed Commonwealth he consolidated
the forces of the six Federated States into an Australian army. The army was built on the plans originally laid down by
Hutton and many of our early military leaders were inspired by his brilliance. When World War I broke out it was suggested
that General Hutton should command the AIF. But as he was 66 years old and had been living in retirement for several
years his disciple, General [Sir] W[illiam] T[hrosby] Bridges, was selected instead. As commander of the first AIF and the
1st Australian Division, General Bridges was killed by a Turkish sniper on Gallipoli in May 1915 [two days after he was
created KCB (Mil)]

'General Edward Hutton died in England in 1923 at the age of 75. His monument is the Royal Military College, Duntroon,
conceived by him not as the aristocratic Sandhurst but as the democratic West Point of Australia.'

Usman Ali Khan Bahadur Fateh Jang, Nizam of Hyderabad  [GCSI 1911, GBE 1917]
The following biography of the 7th and last Nizam of Hyderabad appeared in the October 1967 issue of the Australian
monthly magazine "Parade":-
'In September 1959 some of the 110 sons of the seventh and last Nizam of Hyderabad formed a union to obtain more
pocket money from their father. These would-be unionists, the offspring of scores of the Nizam's wives and concubines,
had banded together to force demands that they should receive the same hand-outs as a group of their father's more
favoured offspring. Although the agitators were forced to keep up appearances on a few hundred dollars a year, their
repeated complaints of poverty had received little sympathy from the Nizam. But now they were a union. They pressed
their claim with renewed vigour. The Nizam relented - a little. He gave them the use of three ancient motor cars and with
that the sons of one of the world's richest and meanest men had to be content.

'For more than half a century such penny-pinching by the Nizam of Hyderabad made news headlines around the world.
Once reputed to be worth about $1000 million, he lorded it over 83,000 square miles of central India and was absolute
ruler of 18 million people. Yet the personal expenditure of the wizened and unkempt, who shuffled around his palace in
carpet slippers and a battered fez, was never more than $20 a month. Of all of India's 562 princes he was the only one
entitled to a British 21-gun salute and to be called His Exalted Highness. [This is somewhat misleading - the heads of state
of Mysore, Jammu and Kashmir, Baroda and Gwalior were also entitled to a 21-gun salute; the difference therefore lies in
the style of address as His Exalted Highness - see later]. He was also the only one to have $6 million worth of banknotes
eaten by rats in his palace cellar.
'He was born Osman Ali Khan on April 6, 1886, and his family traced back to Abu Bakr, Mohammed's father-in-law. His
father, the sixth Nizam, was a flamboyant, hard-drinking Indian ruler in the traditional style. He rode on elephants and in
Rolls-Royces and wore his jewels instead of hoarding them. Although the sixth Nizam had the usual four legal wives of a
Moslem and a harem of 600 concubines, he was not blessed with a son for some years. Then, one of his concubines, a
Hindu dancing girl, presented him with Osman. The delighted ruler promptly recognised him as his son and heir. A little later,
one of the sixth Nizam's legitimate wives produced not one but two sons and the love he had lavished on his first-born
turned to hate. In consequence the future Nizam was educated privately, treated with scorn whenever he met his father
and raised with iron severity.
'In his early 20s the future Nizam had not yet developed his later miserly habits. Actually he had extravagant tastes. He
kept scores of tailors busy running up sarapas (knee-length jackets) which were embroidered in precious jewels. He also
had his own band, which he led in palace concerts. Actually the audience found these concerts boring because the band
rarely got beyond the prince's favourite tune, "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles."

'All this frivolity came to an end in 1911 when, with his father's death, Osman became the seventh Nizam of Hyderabad
and, with a fortune of about $500 million, one of the world's best-known misers. Almost immediately he mounted the
throne the new Nizam closed the ruler's traditional Falaknuma Palace and moved to the more modest Kothi Palace, which
consisted of a dozen unpretentious buildings surrounded by a high wall. In those buildings he stored the fabulous family
wealth of gold and jewellery in hundreds of trunks and wooden boxes. Once, because he was never sure of his jewellery's
value, he asked a Bombay expert to make an inventory and give a valuation. When told the job would take two years and
require a high fee, the Nizam abandoned the project. Another time he decided that his pearls should be taken out of
storage, washed in a special solution to preserve their lustre and graded according to size. It took servants three days to
wash the pearls and spread them out on the roofs of every building in the palace compound, where they formed a
shimmering carpet.

The Nizam had also inherited the world's largest gold table service, consisting of plates, platters, knives, forks, ash trays
and salt shakers for 150 people. Buckingham Palace also has a gold dinner service, but it accommodates only 24 people.
The Nizam's treasure was piled haphazardly in the palace buildings. As it increased, particularly in gold coin, it filled even
bedrooms and garages. Once a truck laden with the Nizam's latest acquisition of gold was driven into the palace grounds.
There was no place to store the wealth, so as a temporary measure a sentry was posted to watch the precious load.
Twenty years later a visitor reported that the gold-filled truck still stood there, its wheels embedded in the soil and its
body partly covered with grass. A sentry was still on guard.

'From the time of the Indian Mutiny the rulers of Hyderabad were always staunch supporters of Britain and the seventh
Nizam followed this tradition. In World War I his troops were employed in many theatres of war and he made generous
financial contributions to Britain's war effort. In recognition of his services King George V bestowed upon the Nizam the
unique titles of His Exalted Highness and Faithful Ally of the British Government. Similarly in World War II the Nizam forgot
his parsimony and provided naval vessels and two squadrons of RAF planes. This time King George VI gave him [in 1946]
the Royal Victorian Chain.

'Although the Nizam maintained four wives, at least 50 concubines, hundreds of children and grandchildren and about 3000
servants and hangers-on, his own life was marked by its simplicity. Crowded out by his ever-increasing treasure, he
camped for years on the ramshackle veranda of one of the palace's decaying buildings with a flimsy partition screening his
scantily furnished bedroom. Each morning he sat on the veranda steps and conducted affairs of state with ministers and
secretaries standing in a respectful semi-circle before him. He usually wore cheap cotton pyjama-type trousers, a
homespun Indian coat and lived on little more than biscuits and rice. His only luxuries were about 50 small cups of coffee
a day, 100 of the cheapest Indian cigarettes and food for the pet goat which accompanied him everywhere about the
palace.

'Then there was the time when he split his walking stick. Although it was suggested he should buy another he decided to
hang on to the fractured cane while it remained in one piece. When the Viceroy, the Marquess of Linlithgow, paid
Hyderabad a visit, the Nizam stood waiting to greet him on the station. He leaned heavily on the old walking stick and it
sagged precariously under his weight. "That stick looks very dangerous, Your Exalted Highness," remarked Linlithgow. "Yes,"
I must have a metal ring put round it," said the Nizam - and he did. The economy-minded potentate rattled around
Hyderabad city in a 1927 Ford car, knitted his own socks and haggled with street vendors selling soft drinks and ice cream.
'Aside from writing poetry and watching surgical operations, the Nizam's only hobby was amassing money. He did this so
well that it is estimated he doubled his father's inheritance in his lifetime. When the Nizam made a personal tour of his
83,000 square miles of territory (from which he derived an income of about $10 million a year) a special tax was levied
on each district for the privilege of having him visit. It was also tradition, for any subject who received a gift from the
Nizam to follow suit and present him with something in return, but it had to be of far greater value if he wanted to remain
in his ruler's good books. There is a story that once the entire palace stock of honey went bad. The Nizam promptly gave
the lot away in small jars and received in return gifts worth $100,000.

'By long-established custom in Hyderabad, a subject had to present the Nizam with one gold and four silver coins when
he was received in audience. The sixth Nizam used merely to touch the coins and return them to the visitor as good luck
luck tokens. However, when his son took over, he kept the coins. On four gala occasions each year when the seventh
Nizam entertained thousands of guests at banquets he would roll up his sleeves and face the
receiving line. Now he was in a position to jerk the five coins from each visitor's hand and drop them quickly into two bags,
one for silver, one for gold. It was estimated that out of these offerings by visitors the Nizam made $500,000 a year.
Additional gifts from subjects soliciting favours brought in another $3 million.

'When England granted India independence in 1947, the old world of the Nizam of Hyderabad crashed about his ears. He
stubbornly refused to join the new nation and backed up his refusal by arming his personal troops with muzzle loaders. All
efforts at negotiation failed and in 1949 India was forced to invade Hyderabad. In the four-day war that followed, 822 of
the Nizam's troops were killed before he capitulated. [For further detail, refer to the Wikipedia entry under "Operation
Polo."] By the terms of settlement he lost all power and all his lands and palaces except one. However, he retained his
gold and jewellery, was given the honorary title of governor and an annual allowance of $500,000. In 1954 the Prime
Minister of India, Nehru, cut out the Nizam's allowance and two years later he lost even his empty governorship of the
then democratic State.

'The last years of the Nizam of Hyderabad were spent plotting with his financial advisers to make sure the Indian
Government did not grab his remaining wealth. He realised on his gold, sold vast amounts of jewellery and put the proceeds
(some $600 million) in at least 50 different trust schemes for the benefit of about 770 members of his family and pensioned
retainers. Constantly bemoaning his own poverty, he spent every waking moment thinking up new economy schemes. He
cut the $12,000-a-month allowance of his eldest son, the Prince of Berar, to $4,000 and ordered him to reduce his harem
to 10. Frail and wizened, he sat through the days on the veranda of his Kothi Palace constantly bewailing the $60,000 a
year he said he was spending out of capital. Other misfortunes overwhelmed him like the rats eating $6 million in bank-
notes lying forgotten in the cellar. He failed in a court action before the House of Lords claiming $2 million he had sent to
agents in England at the time of the Indian Government invasion.

'When China attacked India in 1962, the Government called on the people for money contributions to fight the war. Millions
of people offered their savings: even street beggars, and women gave up their wedding rings. When the Nizam of
Hyderabad forked out $50,000 the news of this comparatively small donation caused a bitter public outcry. In vain did he
protest: I am no longer a rich man. From all over India people contemptuously mailed him small coins in the hope they
would be "of some use to you in your poverty." He kept the coins and wrote personal "thank you" notes to all who had
contributed. In them he reiterated his penury and explained: "My money is now all tied up in trusts." Even on his deathbed,
which was attended by scores of descendants and his pet goat, he was still trying to persuade them all that he was
indeed the world's poorest multi-millionaire.'

Sir Francis Akanu Ibiam  [Hon KBE 1951 and KCMG 1962]
Sir Francis was a distinguished Nigerian medical missionary who later became Governor of the Eastern Region of Nigeria.
He found himself in the middle of a diplomatic incident in 1959 when, on a visit to Northern Rhodesia [today's Zambia], he
was refused service in a cafe because of the colour of his skin. During the Nigerian Civil War of 1967-1970, Ibiam actively
supported the cause of Biafra, and, in protest against the British Government's support of the Nigeria's federal government,
he renounced both of his knighthoods.
The London "Daily Telegraph" of 5 September 1959 reported:-
'Two Rhodesian Governments today expressed regret for an incident last weekend in which Sir Francis Ibiam, a Nigerian
doctor and chairman of the Governing Council of the University College of Ibadan, was refused a cup of tea in a cafe at
Chingola, Northern Rhodesia. The proprietor served two whites accompanying him and said: "We do not serve Africans."
'The Federal Prime Minister, Sir Roy Welensky, said: "I am expressing my regret for this incident to the Prime Minister of
the Federation of Nigeria. Whatever our achievements here, and they are substantial, we cannot expect the world to treat
us with any great respect so long as we hand out this kind of treatment to our visitors."
'A Northern Rhodesia Government statement expressed the "greatest concern and regret" at the treatment accorded "a
distinguished visitor to the territory." It brought discredit "to the territory and particularly to its white inhabitants."
The London "Daily Telegraph" of 6 September 1967:-
'Sir Francis Ibiam, 61, former Governor of Eastern Nigeria and now an adviser to rebel Biafra, has renounced his knight-
hoods in protest at Britain's supply of arms to Federal Nigeria. He was a Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael
and St. George [KCMG] and a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire [KBE].
'He said in a letter to the Queen that Christian Britain had shamelessly let down Christian Biafra. Many tribesmen in the
north of Federal Nigeria are Muslims. The Ibu rebels of Biafra regard these as their main enemies.'
Sir Alieu Sulayman Jack  [nominated Kt Bach 1970 but never invested]
Sir Alieu was Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Gambia between 1966 and 1972. His name was included in
the 1970 New Year's Honours List as being an intended Knight Bachelor. However, Gambia became a republic on 24
April 1970 and left the Queen's Realms. As a result, Jack never received the accolade or Letters Patent. For a similar case,
see Sir Edward Victor Luckhoo.
Sir Francis Stanley Jackson  [GCIE 1927 and GCSI 1932]
Jackson was the younger son of William Lawies Jackson, who was created 1st Baron Allerton in 1902. He was educated at
Harrow, where his "fag" was Winston Churchill, before going up to Trinity College, Cambridge. It was here that his cricketing
prowess blossomed, and he played for the University, for Yorkshire, and finally for England, which he captained during the
five tests of the 1905 Ashes series. All in all, he played 20 Tests, making 1,415 runs at 48.79 with 5 centuries, and took 24
wickets at 33.29.
After a relatively short political career, Jackson was appointed Governor of Bengal in 1927. "The Daily Mail" of 8 February
1932 reported that:-
'Sir Stanley Jackson, Governor of Bombay, was shot at by a girl yesterday afternoon while he was presiding as chancellor
over the annual university [of Calcutta] convocation. He is the third Governor to be attacked in little more than a year.
'He was delivering an address emphasising the dangers of allowing youth to be interested in certain political associations
when the girl left her seat and, walking towards the dais, fired five revolver shots from a distance of 30 feet.
'The vice-chancellor of the university, Dr. Hasan Suhrawardy, rushed forward and grappled with her, diverting her aim.
'Sir Stanley was not hit, but Dr. Dineschandra Sen, a professor who was sitting near, was slightly wounded. The five
bullets were found in the sound screen behind the chancellor's chair. The girl, Bina Das, who is about 20, was immediately
arrested and removed. Poison was found on her,
'Sir Stanley was unperturbed by the attack and after a brier pause continued his address. This indifference to danger
evoked spontaneous cheers from the large assembly, and especially from the Indian students. The assailant was a
student at the Diocesan College in Calcutta.'
For his promptitude in tackling the would-be assassin, Dr. Suhrawardy was soon after rewarded with a knighthood. For
further details, see under his entry in the "Knightage" pages.
The "Daily Telegraph" of 16 February 1932 reported that:-
'Bina Das, the Indian girl student, who fired five shots at the Hon. Sir Stanley Jackson, the Governor of Bengal, nine
days ago, was today sentenced to years' rigorous imprisonment.
'The girl, who was remarkably composed, read from a document her reasons for firing the shots. She said:
"I sought a way to death by offering myself at the feet of my country to invite the attention of all to measures of
Government which can unsex even a frail woman like myself, brought up under all the best traditions of Indian
womanhood."
'The girl received the decision with a smile and a courteous bow.'
Maharajah Sir Harisinghji, Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir  [KCIE 1918, KCVO 1922, GCIE 1929, GCSI 1933 and
GCVO 1946]
The following article appeared in the January 1972 number of the monthly Australian magazine "Parade":-
"Among the revellers of the Victory Ball held in London's Albert Hall on Armistice Night in 1919 was 24-year-old Prince Hari
Singh, the plump, pleasureseeking heir presumptive to the Maharajah of Kashmir. During the gay evening the prince was
was introduced to buxom, thirtyish Mrs. Maude Robinson, wife of a small-time bookmaker and gambler. The following
Christmas they were in Paris together. And there, after the couple were discovered in a hotel bedroom, a gang of English
crooks staged one of the most sensational blackmail coups in criminal history. The plotters extorted £150,000 from the
prince, playing on his fear that a divorce scandal would imperil his succession to the throne of Kashmir.

"Five years passed before the blackmail came to light, and in a dramatic London court case that followed Prince Hari Singh
was referred to only as "Mr. A". The American Press had no scruples about disclosing his identity to the world, but that did
not prevent him ascending the throne of Kashmir when his uncle, the maharajah, died a year later. Then he collected an
income of £5,000,000 a year while ruling his 4,000,000 impoverished subjects in the Garden-of-Eden state set among the
fertile lower valleys of the Himalayas. As maharajah he travelled the world in a silver-plated private plane, occupied a
glittering Versailles-like palace in his capital of Srinagar and ruthlessly stamped out all opposition to his despotic rule.
Ultimately this portly hedonist lost his throne after India obtained her independence in 1947 and Kashmir was partitioned
between the new States of India and Pakistan.
"Prince Hari Singh was born in Srinagar on September 23, 1895, the nephew of Kashmir's eccentric maharajah, Sir Pratap
Singh. His father died when he was still an infant and so Hari Singh became his childless uncle's heir. Sir Pratap Singh, who
had succeeded to the throne of Kashmir in 1885, was best known for his passion for cricket. He always announced the
number of runs he would make before his innings began and no bowler had the insolence to take his wicket before he
reached that score. Sir Pratap was escorted to the pitch by his aide-de-camp and armour bearers. At the crease two men
rolled up his sleeves and pulled on his gloves, while two more buckled his pads. Then His Highness was left to defy the
bowling which he did by ignoring every ball bowled, even if it hit the stumps, except slow full tosses on the leg side.

"As Sir Pratap's heir, Hari Singh was brought up to rule. As a boy he served as a page to Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India, on
ceremonial occasions. His uncle provided his uniform - a golden robe encrusted with pearls said to have cost the
maharajah £1,000,000. Prince Hari Singh first went to England first went to England with his uncle for the coronation of
King George V in 1910 [sic]. Thereafter he was a regular visitor on his own quest for pleasure.
"On the 1919 trip that was to cost him so dearly in blackmail he was accompanied by a newly-appointed aide-de-camp,
Captain Charles Arthur. A jaunty Irish rogue the prince had met while big-game hunting in Africa, Captain Arthur realised
the possibility of blackmail as soon as he saw the developing friendship with Mrs. Maude Robinson after the Victory Ball.
Soon he acquired two accomplices, a ne'er-do-well swindler named Montague Noel Newton and William Cooper Hobbs, a
criminal ran a bogus solicitor's office in London under the name of Appleton and Co. The Robinsons were not living
together and the husband had no part in the plot. However, although she later denied it, Mrs. Robinson probably knew
what was going on.

"Early on the morning of December 26, 1919, Newton rushed into Hari Singh's suite in a Paris hotel (the door of which had
just been unlocked by Captain Arthur) and confronted the prince in bed with his mistress. Posing as the woman's husband,
Newton shouted: "Now I've got you! I've caught you with my wife!" Mrs. Robinson screamed, jumped out of bed and put
a convincing performance of scratching Newton's face and pulling his hair. Without revealing that the intruder was not in
fact her husband, she then pretended to allow the two men to quieten her hysterics. "After all, Maudie," the prince said
soothingly, "he is your husband." Mrs. Robinson then ran into another room and Newton left the suite with the parting
threat: "You'll hear from my solicitors. I have all the evidence I need." An hour later Mrs. Robinson had packed and
departed for London. She never saw Hari Singh again.
"Meanwhile, the highly agitated prince had summoned his ADC, told him what had happened and asked his advice. There
was only one thing to do, said Captain Arthur after listening sympathetically to his distraught master. He must buy
Robinson off. The scandal of divorce proceedings would certainly cause the British Government to veto his succession to
the throne of Kashmir. The prince agreed and also accepted Arthur's suggestion that the ADC locate the supposed
Robinson before he left Paris and offer him hush money.

"As a result, on December 30 Hari Singh signed a cheque made out to Charles Robinson for £150,000 and was assured by
Captain Arthur that the matter was ended. Arthur was supposed to hand the cheque to Robinson. Instead, he sent it to
his confederate, Hobbs, in London.
"Meanwhile, Newton (who had earlier been introduced to the real Robinson by Mrs. Robinson) had seen the husband and
told him that his wife was "playing around with a n****r in Paris." Robinson was highly indignant and talked of a divorce,
but he soon calmed down when Newton suggested that he let a firm of solicitors he knew, Appleton and Co., try to get
some money out of Prince Hari Singh.
"Hobbs (as Appleton and Co.) agreed to act for Charles Robinson, omitting to inform him that he had just opened an
account in his name at the Midland Bank with Hari Singh's £150,000 cheque. Over the next few days Hobbs (who had
posed at the bank as Charles Robinson) cashed several large cheques there and ultimately withdrew the whole £150,000.
Then Hobbs called in Robinson and told him Hari Singh had agreed to pay £25,000 if he would withdraw his divorce action.
Robinson was delighted. He paid Hobbs £4000 as legal fees and was reunited with his wife, who was quite happy to help
him spend the windfall and also believed Hari Singh had paid only £25,000. Hobbs, Newton and Arthur split the remaining
amount of £125,000. Hari Singh returned to Kashmir and with that the whole affair might have finished.
"But in 1924 the conspirators fell out. Newton accused Hobbs of swindling him over a deal and out of spite he revealed to
Robinson that the prince had actually paid out £150,000. In November 1924 Robinson sued the Midland Bank for the
balance of £125,000 - claiming that they had wrongly paid the money out of his account on a forged cheque.

"The whole story came out at the trial, the bank finally winning the case on the ground that the money had been obtained
illegally from the prince and thus, at law, Robinson was not entitled to any part of it. This immediately brought Scotland
Yard into the case and as a result Hobbs and Arthur both served short prison terms. No charges were laid against Newton
or the Robinsons.
"Meanwhile, the American Press had broken the news that the mysterious "Mr. A." in the blackmail proceedings was in fact
Prince Hari Singh, heir to the Maharajah of Kashmir. His shocked uncle banished him to a remote estate for six months and
made him perform ritual acts of humiliation and penance. However, he succeeded to the throne of Kashmir on the death of
his uncle late in 1925 and the British Government gave him a magnificent coronation that cost £500,000. The new
maharajah travelled frequently to Europe, always in great state. He booked accommodation at hotels by the floor and a
fleet of six Rolls-Royces, all carrying the word Kashmir in scarlet on the radiators, provided his transport.

"Most of the population of Kashmir were Moslems, but their ruler, Hari Singh, was a Hindu, and racial riots often kept his
realm in a state of turmoil. After World War II, with independence for India imminent, Hari Singh, could not make up his
mind whether to take Kashmir into Hindu India or Moslem Pakistan. In November 1947 Pathan tribesmen from Pakistan
invaded Kashmir and the monarch fled to Jammu with an 85-vehicle convoy loaded with his treasure. There he appealed
to Indian Prime Minister Nehru for aid, offering in return to sign an instrument of cession by which Kashmir became part of
India. Nehru agreed and sent in the Indian Army, although today Kashmir still remains a bone of contention between India
and Pakistan.

"Hari Singh accepted an annual allowance of £50,000 from the Indian Government and settled in Bombay, where he
devoted himself to the breeding of polo ponies. He also began building a grandiose apartment block, but was warned by a
fortune teller that he would die the moment the building was completed. So, from then on, on the site he employed a
permanent team of workers to alternately tear down and rebuild a portion of the building.

"Sir Hari Singh died of a heart attack on April 25, 1961, having outlived all the conspirators in the blackmail case that
almost cost him his throne. Mrs. Robinson died penniless in 1965. To the end she still proudly boasted that she had
spent £100,000 before she was 45 although she never admitted having been involved in the blackmail plot."

Sir Vivian Everard Donne Jarrad  [nominated Kt Bach 1937, but not installed]
Jarrad was named as an intended Knight Bachelor in the 1937 Coronation Honours List. His citation in the London Gazette
(Supplement 34396, page 3077) describes him as "Agent, Bengal-Nagpur Railway." He died, however, before he could be
invested. In the following year, there appeared a notice in the Gazette (issue 34486, page 1163) dated 17 February 1938
which states that "The KING has been graciously pleased, by Warrant under His Majesty's Royal Sign Manual, to grant unto
Beryl Lennox, widow of Vivian Everard Donne Jarrad, Gentleman, the style, title, rank and precedence to which she would
have been entitled had her husband survived to receive the degree, style and title of a Knight Bachelor at the hands of
His Majesty."
Charles John Johnston  [nominated Kt Bach 1918, but died before his Patent of Knighthood could be completed]
Johnston's name appears as an addendum to a listing of intended knights published in the London Gazette (issue 30825,
page 9111) with the notation that "the Honourable Charles John Johnston, Speaker of the Legislative Council of the
Dominion of New Zealand, died before his Patent of Knighthood could be completed."

Subsequently, the Edinburgh Gazette (issue 13416, page 1138) included the following notice:-
'The King has been pleased, by Warrant under His Majesty's Royal Sign Manual, bearing date the 15th January 1919, to
ordain and declare that Alice Johnston, widow of the Honourable Charles John Johnston, later Speaker of the Legislative
Council of the Dominion of New Zealand, shall have, hold and enjoy the style, title, place and precedence to which she
would have been entitled had her husband survived the receive the honour of Knight Bachelor at the hands of His Majesty.'
Sir Joseph Jonas [Kt Bach 1905, degraded 1918]
Jonas was born in 1845 at Bingen, then in the Grand Duchy of Hesse. He refused to do military service for Prussia and
migrated to England in 1867. Two years later he settled in Sheffield and was naturalized as a British subject in 1876,
marrying a Sheffield lady in the same year. He became a very wealthy man in his role as managing director of Sir Joseph
Jonas, Colver & Co. Limited, which owned the Continental and Novo Steel Works in Sheffield. He became Lord Mayor of
Sheffield in 1905, the year when he was knighted, and was also for many years the German Consul in Sheffield.
In July 1918, Jonas was charged at the Central Criminal Court with conspiring in 1913 with Charles Alfred Vernon, who
had been employed at the Ministry of Munitions, to contravene the Official Secrets Act by obtaining and communicating
information regarding Messrs Vickers' rifle works at Crayford in Kent, which was calculated to be useful to an enemy.
Both defendants were acquitted of felony, but the jury found that Vernon had communicated information, which had been
unlawfully obtained, to Jonas, and that Jonas had aided and abetted Vernon to commit that misdemeanour. Jonas was
fined £2,000 and Vernon £1,000.
Mr. Tindal Atkinson KC, in his speech for the defence, said that "Jonas took upon himself sole responsibility of having
obtained the information. Vernon was his clerk, and was instructed by Jonas to obtain the information. The information
referred to was in no sense information that was intended to assist a possible enemy. The sole purpose Jonas had in his
mind was to obtain information for the purpose of satisfying an enquiry made by a customer of his, who unfortunately, as
it now turned out, was a German. That information was connected to a firm which was about to open business in
competition with von Gontard [Baron Paul von Gontard, managing director of DWM, a German munitions manufacturer]. In
case of that kind, involving communication with any member of the German Empire, it was almost impossible for the jury's
mind to be free from prejudice, and it was deplorable in the interests of justice that the case should be tried now in
in reference to matters which took place nearly five years ago. The whole matter was nothing more or less than a trade
inquiry acceded to by Sir Joseph Jonas to assist his customer. It was assisting the trade of Germany and adding to her
riches, it was true, but it was not political information. Vickers' was purely a private concern, and the only connection
which had been shown between the Government and Vickers' was that in 1913 the Government submitted to that firm
the pattern of a rifle which was to be manufactured on a commercial basis. But that rifle was stillborn, and Messrs Vickers'
had not made any of them."
The Attorney General (Sir Frederick Smith, later 1st Earl of Birkenhead) said that "the evidence indicated that in the time
of peace the amount of work given by the German Government to the von Gontard company was just sufficient to keep it
going, so that it might be useful to the German Government on the outbreak of war. Sir Joseph Jonas knew that he was
giving information as to what was taking place in a factory which enjoyed the confidence and secrets of the British
Government to a man who was periodically in communication with the experts and the buyers of the German Government."
The Judge, Mr. Justice Lawrence, in summing up said that "the text of the Official Secrets Act was a wide one. The
safety and interests of the State were matters which affected every individual from the highest to the lowest, and,
consequently, it was right that the statute should be wide in its terms and all-embracing. The question whether at the
time Vickers' works was a prohibited place was the key of the situation. It would be idle to read the Act as protecting a
works while rifles were being made and not when it was being prepared for the installation of machinery necessary for the
manufacture of the rifles. It would be most unjust for the jury to allow their minds to be prejudiced against the prisoner by
the conduct of the Germans of the war. But they had to consider that here was a German Consul, Sir Joseph Jonas, and
there was von Gontard, who was acting head of a private company producing Mauser rifles. Our Government in 1913 were
minded apparently to produce a rifle of new construction and great power. Information as that would be of great value.
Sheffield was one of the astute cities of this country, and to gain pre-eminence there a person must be very wide-awake
and able to 'put two and two together.' Sir Joseph Jonas had amassed a great fortune in Sheffield by great industry and
great ability, and yet he wanted them to come to the conclusion that in dealing with von Gontard he was simple as a child
and did not know anything about why von Gontard was making his persistent inquiries about Vickers'."
Following Jonas' conviction, the London Gazette of 3rd September 1918 [issue 30881, page 10391] contained notice that
"Letters Patent, bearing date the 30th day of August, 1918, have passed the Great Seal degrading Joseph Jonas from the
degree, title and dignity of Knight Bachelor, which were conferred upon him on the 24th day of July, 1905."
Sir George Alfred Julius  [Kt Bach 1929]
The September 1958 issue of the monthly Australian magazine "Parade" contains the following biography:-
'There are still many people who believe the automatic totalisator, which is as much a part of the modern racetrack as a
horse, was invented by the Most Reverend Churchill Julius [1847-1938], Archbishop of Christchurch [1890-1925] and
Primate of New Zealand [1922-1925]. The story gained credence when His Grace, a superb engineer and clock expert, was
seen leaving the totalisator at an Auckland racecourse early this [20th] century. The racing fraternity and churchgoers of
the city were convinced the machine had broken down and the Archbishop had been called to fix it. Actually, the machine
which revolutionised betting was invented by the Archbishop's son, George Alfred Julius, one of Australia's greatest
engineering geniuses.

'George Julius was born on April 29, 1873, at Norwich, England. He was still a child when his father, the Rev. Churchill
Julius, was appointed Archdeacon of Ballarat. George was sent to Melbourne Grammar School. The archdeacon, when not
preaching or peddling furiously round the town on his bicycle, was usually to be found covered in grease in the workshop
at the rear of his home tinkering with weird gadgets. In the early 1890s, the Archdeacon was created Bishop of
Christchurch. He took his lathes with him to New Zealand. Christchurch had never seen or heard of a bishop like him.
Wherever he went, his dexterity with such tools as knitting needles and hairpins became proverbial. He became clock-
mender-in-chief to the diocese. Country vicars kept clocks that would not work until Bishop Julius paid his annual visit.

'Meanwhile, the mechanical bishop's son, George Julius, was forging ahead at Canterbury College, Christchurch. In 1885,
he graduated B.Sc. He was still learning a few tricks in engineering from the bishop when the West Australian Department
of Railways advertised for an assistant engineer. George got the job. His extraordinary flair for imaginative engineering
brought him quickly to the notice of his chief. He was promoted to chief draughtsman and engineer in charge of tests.
About this time they had an election in W.A. The losers clamoured the voting was irregular. Young Julius set to work and
invented a fool-proof voting machine. It worked splendidly. The Government, however, decided preferences should be
handled in a different way. Julius fixed that, only to find the authorities wanted something else. Promptly he told them to
hold their elections their own way, and put the voting machine aside. It was always in his mind, however. Within weeks
he visualised adapting it as an automatic totalisator.

'George Julius had no interest in racing. To emphasise this, he often said he did not know a horse's head from its tail.
Totalisators were not new. A machine of sorts had been used in Sydney by the A[Australian] J[hockey] C[lob] back in
1878. Officials frowned on it as a serious departure from racecourse tradition. The Press, however, claimed it would
remove some of the great abuses connected with betting. The first machines were worked by hand. They consisted of a
line of ticket sellers at an open bench. Behind them was a board with a series of numbers, each with a lever. The sellers
called aloud the bets they took. A sweating man at the board pulled the appropriate levers to register the bets. Wagering
finished, the dividend, after deduction of various percentages, was worked out.

'In those days, a dividend was paid only on the winner. Later, the method of computing dividends for places was evolved.
Julius wanted to make a fully automatic machine that would record the bets and compute the dividends. The intricate
mechanism was to be operated by electricity. He was still working on the machine when he met Eva O'Connor, daughter
of the W.A. Public Works Department and supervising engineer of the Kalgoorlie waterline [Charles Yelverton O'Connor
[1843-1902] after whom one the world's biggest electorates (335,000 sq m) in the Australian House of Representatives is
named]. George married Eva, for, apart from his natural affection for her, she was one of those rare girls who did mind a
husband who spent much of his time at home engrossed in a workshop.

In 1907, the Julius's moved to Darling Point, Sydney. George's first act was to erect his workshop. As a consultant
engineer, often called by the Commonwealth and State Governments, he had little time to spare. Every free minute he had
went into the weird collection of wheels, cogs, ropes and pulleys that made up his totalisator. At last it was finished - a
huge affair comprising a number of cast-iron boxes and an apparent tangle of piano wires and lead weights. Julius opened
negotiations with the Ellerslie Racecourse, in Auckland.

'The first automatic totalisator took a lot of selling. Operators were doubtful if the public would have much confidence in
a machine that calculated bets and dividends. Julius convinced the racecourse authorities his machine was fool-proof.
They decided to buy it. George supervised the setting of every nut and bolt. One Saturday in 1913 [Easter Saturday, 22
March 1913], it was ready.
'Meanwhile the old bishop had gone up in the ecclesiastical world. He was now Archbishop of Christchurch and [later]
Primate of New Zealand. His Grace was proud of his son's achievements and decided he must see this new totalisator. He
was well aware of the rumour current in New Zealand that he had actually designed it, but, because of his position, could
hardly associate himself with an instrument of gambling.
'Early that Saturday morning, His Grace entered the building housing his son's totalisator. He became so absorbed in the
mechanical perfection of the machine that, by the time he left, a crowd was massing for the races. The Archbishop slipped
out as quietly as possible, but not before hundreds had seen him. The whisper raced round the course: "That new-fangled
tote machine broke down and they had to get the Archbishop in to fix it."

'Back in Sydney, George Julius saw the possibility of a world market for his exclusively Australian machine. He took over an
old shed at Newtown and put the Julius totalisator on the market. All the big courses in Australia installed them, despite
the enormous cost. With their efficiency proved, Julius and his top technicians went overseas on a great selling campaign.
England, France, India installed Julius machines on their tracks. The firm moved to a bigger building in Chalmers St., where
George Julius continued to improve the design of the totalisator till it was as mechanically perfect and fool-proof as human
genius could make it.
'Julius' interest in this money-spinner, however, was secondary to his model railway at his Darling Point home and his
association with the C.S.I.R.O. [Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation]. Every part of the railway
he built himself. It comprised a model city, with wharves, working models of ships, cranes and dredges. Dozens of trains
ran from the wharves through tunnels in the city and out into the country. The set was exhibited throughout Australia and
raised thousands of pounds for charity.

His other great interest was the C.S.I.R.O., which he was asked to set up. Prime Minister Bruce asked Julius to select two
other men to act with him on the council of the C.S.I.R.O. He approached Dr. [Sir Albert Cherbury] David Rivett, an
engineering professor at Melbourne University, and Mr. W[illiam] J[ohnstone] Newbigin [1874-1927], a well-known engineer.
After the council was formed, a member of Parliament, mistaking Dr. Rivett for a doctor of medicine, asked: "What is this
council? It seems to consist of two _____ plumbers and a pill roller." From that day whenever George Julius was asked to
describe his occupation, he always referred to himself as a "_____ plumber."

'When motor cars first arrived in Sydney, George Julius interrupted his research into totalisator machines, soil standards,
prickly pears and timber to buy one. The car was one of the first Fords landed in Sydney. Gears were operated by a lever
on the floor. Pedal gears did not come till later. One day Mrs. Julius took the Ford for a run in Centennial Park and stalled
the engine. She was wondering how to start it again when a passing workman offered to help. "What you do," he said, "is
to put this lever here, that one there, wind the starting handle, so ----" The Ford roared into life and took off. It hurtled
over the grass, whizzed between two trees, dipped its bonnet, and ploughed into a lake. On it went till water clogged the
fuel system. It stood desolately surrounded by water. Some minutes later, George Julius received a phone call at his
Sydney office. "Mr. Julius," said a voice. "Your Ford is stuck in the middle of one of the lakes at Centennial Park." It took a
lot to upset George Julius, but it is on record that a week later he was still fuming.

'In 1929, George Julius was knighted. The nation appreciated the work he had done with the C.S.I.R.O. Later, he was
honoured with the degree of Dr. of Science (Hon.) by the University of New Zealand. The University of Melbourne gave him
its highest award for engineering achievement - the W. C. Kernot Memorial Medal [named after William Charles Kernot
(1845-1909), the first professor of engineering at the University of Melbourne].
'On June 28, 1946, 73 years-old Sir George Julius died leaving a legacy of engineering achievement that will assist
Australia's national economy for many years to come.'

Allan Kemakeza  [Kt Bach 2001, annulled 2016]
The following entry appeared in the Edinburgh Gazette of 6 January 2017 (issue 27816, page 10):-
"Letters Patent dated 23 December 2016 have passed the Great Seal of the Realm cancelling and annulling the Knighthood
conferred upon Allan Kemakeza on the 16 June 2001 as a Knight Bachelor."
Sir Vincent Hunter Barrington Kennett-Barrington  [Kt Bach 1886]
From the "Aberdeen Daily Journal" of 18 July 1903:-
'A Westminster coroner's jury yesterday returned a verdict of accidental death in the case of Sir Vincent Hunter Barrington
Kennett Barrington, who died at his town residence from the effects of an accident sustained by ballooning. Evidence
showed that deceased had made a balloon ascent with Mr. Frank Butler from the Ranelagh Club on June 10th, and, in
descending, Sir Vincent, instead of kneeling in the car, came down with stiff leg and sprained his ankle. Blood poisoning
supervened, following suppuration of the ankle joint.'
