Sir James Charlemagne Dormer  [KCB 1889]
Dormer was the second son of the 11th Baron Dormer. His entire career was spent in the military, eventually rising to
become Commander-in-Chief of the Madras Army in 1891. He died in 1893 after being mauled by a tiger, as is reported in
the "Australian Town and Country Journal" of 3 June 1893:-
"A few weeks ago one of our cable messages announced the death of Sir James Charlemagne Dormer, K.C.B., Commander-
in-Chief of the Madras Army. The Madras Weekly Mail, now to hand, brings full particulars of the circumstances which
caused his death. It appears that on April 25, his Excellency, with Major Kekewich, Captain Cavaye and Mr. Wapshare,
went out after a tiger in the direction of the Pykara jungles. About 10 miles away from Ootacamund, and in the direction
of the Pykara road, his Excellency came upon a tigress, which he shot at and wounded in the chest. The wounded animal
then bolted into the shola [an evergreen forest], leaving a trail of blood behind. Sir James followed her up, always an
injudicious thing to do, and coming suddenly upon her she charged him. Sir James, not being prepared for the attack, fired
from his hip, hitting the tigress in the stomach. Being on the steep side of a bank at the time, he seems to have slipped
and fallen, and the tigress seized his right leg, and mauled the calf and foot severely. Major Kekewich and the others were
within a short distance of the Chief, but not knowing what had happened, did not come to his assistance. However, the
dogs came up and went for the tigress which, turning to attack them, left his Excellency and retreated into the shola
again, where she was met by Captain Cavaye and Mr. Wapshare; the former at once fired and killed her. Assistance was
at once rendered, and the Commander-in-Chief was brought to his home by the evening (the accident having taken place
at about 2 p.m.) and was promptly attended to by Surgeon-major Walker. For some days he appeared to be doing well,
but a relapse set in, and he died on May 3.
"The deceased gentleman came from an old Buckinghamshire family. He was a cousin of the real Roger Tichborne, and his
career was a brilliant one. He saw plenty of hard fighting in the Crimea, the Indian Mutiny, and China, and was engaged in
the Egyptian Campaign of 1882, and the Soudan Expedition of 1885. It was during this campaign that Sir James Dormer
performed that amusing feat which will always be associated with his name. According to one account, he is said to have
galloped to the front before an engagement, and, to the astonishment and horror of the advancing foe, to have taken out
his glass eye, flinging it in the air and catching it, while he shouted in derision "Can your Mahdi do this?"
Sir John Montgomery Dunningham  [nominated KBE 1938]
Dunningham was to be nominated KBE in the 1938 Birthday Honours List, but he died before the list was published in the
London Gazette. Consequently, his name never appeared on any list of newly created knights. However, a notice in the
Gazette of 25 November 1938 (issue 34574, page 7430), states that, effective from 4 July 1938, his widow was entitled to
the style to which she would have been entitled had her husband survived. The following report appeared in "The Maitland
Daily Mercury" on 9 June 1938:-
"The late Mr. J.M. Dunningham's services to the State [of New South Wales] as Minister in Charge of the 150th
Anniversary Celebrations and as Minister for Labour and Industry, have been recognised by his appointment as Knight
Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
"The Governor, Lord Wakehurst, made the following statement last evening:-
'The King has been graciously pleased to approve that the Honourable John Montgomery Dunningham, Minister for Labour
and Industry, and Minister in Charge of the recent 150th Anniversary Celebrations, should be appointed a Knight
Commander of the Civil Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in the birthday honours list. Mr.
Dunningham died on May 28, 1938, and his Majesty has been graciously pleased to approve that Mrs. [Mary Agnes]
Dunningham be granted the style, title, place and precedence to which she would have been entitled had her husband
survived to receive the honour of knighthood and to be invested with the insignia as a Knight Commander of the said
Order.'
Sir Henry Marion Durand  [KCSI 1867]
Durand was a British Indian Army officer and colonial administrator, who, at the time of his death was Lieutenant-
Governor of the Punjab. The following account of his death is extracted from "The Life of Major-General Sir Henry
Marion Durand" [W.H.Allen & Co, London, 1883] written by his son, (Sir) Henry Mortimer Durand [qv].

"About five o'clock in the afternoon of the 31st December [1870] he left his camp to visit the outpost, garden, and
town of Tank [in modern-day Pakistan]. Having inspected the outpost on foot, he mounted an elephant, and with
the Tank chief seated beside him, went on to the garden. The entrance from the garden into the town consists, to
quote the official report, "of an outer gateway leading into a covered square enclosure, out of which a second
gateway, at right angles to the first, leads into the main street. Both gateways are flat-topped with wooden
lintels. The outer gateway is of sufficient height to allow and elephant and howdah to pass, but the second
gateway is considerably lower, and from the outer to the inner gateway the ground rises." Towards this passage,
as it was growing dark, my father's elephant was turned. He was of course ignorant of the ground, and the mahout
who drove the animal equally so, for it was one of the camp elephants, the Tank chief having none of his own.
They passed in safety through the first gateway, when it seems to have occurred to the mahout that the second
was too low, and he raised his driving iron to measure the height. The iron struck against a beam overhead, and
my father called out to the man to take care, but it was too late. As the mahout tried to turn the elephant, it
started forward, frightened apparently by the noise overhead and by the darkness; and the howdah crashed into
the roof. The Tank chief, though stunned by the blow, was found lying on the broken howdah when the elephant
had cleared the gateway; but my father, a man of great height, was forced backwards from his seat and fell to the
ground, his head and shoulders striking against a hard mud wall. When the officers in attendance came up, he was
lying on his face just beyond the inner gateway, bleeding and insensible. He was carried back to camp, and it was
then found that he was partly paralyzed by a severe injury to the spine. At first there was some hope that he
might survive the shock, for towards morning he had fully recovered consciousness, and was able to take some
nourishment, He was then cheerful, and apparently unaware of the imminence of the danger; only concerned at
giving "so much trouble" to those about him. As the day wore on, the medical men saw that recovery was
impossible, and about four o'clock in the afternoon he was told that he could not live many hours. He met the
announcement with perfect calmness. "What a little thing," he was heard to say to himself; "it will be a warning."
His first thought was for his work, and calling for an officer the Punjab secretariat he gave orders that a telegram
should be despatched at once to inform the Government of India. Then he sent for those of his children who were
with him in camp; and after explaining to them where they would find all important papers, and entrusting them
with some messages for others, he spoke a few words of farewell. He told them he was dying; that his life had been
a hard and bitter one; and that the only thing which had borne him through it had been the love and fear of God.
He begged them as his last advice to look to Christ in all things, to do justice, and to love the right. A few hours
later he passed quietly away, and it seemed to some of those about him that "he was glad to go."
Sir Alfred Burdon Ellis  [nominated KCB 1894]
A notice contained in the London Gazette of 17 July 1894 [issue 26532, page 4082] states that Alfred Burdon Ellis was to
have been recommended for a KCB had he survived. One month later [issue 26543, page 4808] the following notice
appeared:-

"The Queen has been pleased to ordain and declare that Emma Ellis, the widow of Lieutenant-Colonel (with the local and
temporary rank of Colonel) Alfred Burdon Ellis, C.B., the West India Regiment, Commanding the Troops on the West Coast
of Africa, shall have, hold, and enjoy the same style, title, place and precedence to which she would have been entitled
had her husband survived and been invested with the Insignia of a Knight Commander of the Most Honourable Order of the
Bath, for which Honour he would have been recommended to her Majesty, as notified in the London Gazette of the 17th
ultimo, had he survived."
Sir Howard Crauford Elphinstone VC  [KCB (Civ) 1871]
Elphinstone was awarded a Victoria Cross for his bravery during the Crimean War. The London Gazette of 4th June
1858 [issue 22149, page 2757] reveals the act of bravery which earned him the award; "For fearless conduct, in
having, on the night after the unsuccessful attack on the Redan [i.e. 18 June 1855], volunteered to command a
party of volunteers, who proceeded to search for and bring back the scaling ladders left behind after the repulse;
and while successfully performing this task, and rescuing trophies from the Russians, Captain Elphinstone conducted
a persevering search, close to the enemy, for wounded men, twenty of whom he rescued and brought back to the
Trenches."
According to Lord Ashcroft's book "Victoria Cross Heroes", "....in the final assault on Sebastopol, Elphinstone was
'killed.' His seemingly lifeless body was taken from the battlefield and placed in a mound of corpses awaiting burial.
His servant, who had been searching for his master, recognised Elphinstone's boots and dragged his body from the
pile. It was then discovered that he was unconscious rather than dead and he was given urgent medical treatment.
Elphinstone had been struck in the head by a shell splinter and his injuries were so severe that he never regained
the sight in his right eye."
After his return home, Elphinstone was in 1859 appointed governor to Prince Arthur (later the Duke of Connaught)
and subsequently to Prince Leopold (later Duke of Albany).
In March 1890, Elphinstone was drowned after falling overboard from a ship on which he was a passenger. The
following report appeared in the Dundee "Evening Telegraph" of 15 March 1890;-
"Details of the drowning of Sir Howard Elphinstone have just come to hand. It appears that he, his wife, and
daughters left Plymouth on the afternoon of Saturday, the 8th inst., on board the New Zealand Company's
steamer Tongariro. The General had for some time past been suffering from illness, and was taking the voyage for
the benefit of his health. At half-past nine on the night of the 8th, when the Tongariro was at the mouth of the
Channel, General Elphinstone came on the saloon deck to look at the lights of Ushant [an island at the south-
western end of the English Channel], which were coming in to view. He stood talking on that deck with Mr. Vivian,
junior, a passenger, standing just before the chartroom, on the port side of the ship. Mr Vivian was sitting on the
skylight, and General Elphinstone facing him. The weather was clear, with a fresh wind and some rough sea. The
ship was occasionally rolling, although not heavily, and it is evident that General Elphinstone thought lightly of the
rolling, as he might easily have steadied himself by holding on to the bars of the skylight or on to the window of
the chartroom, which were both within his reach. While the General was standing there came a heavier roll than
previously, and just as the ship was recovering from it General Elphinstone's feet slipped and he shot like a flash
against the gunwale chains, and turning a complete somersault over them, went overboard. The fourth officer, who
was standing close by, saw the General fall on a partially open port below, and then roll off into the water. The
engines were immediately reversed, and a patent lifebuoy bearing a light was thrown overboard. The ship within a
very few minutes returned to the spot, and a boat lowered and cruised around the spot for two hours; but no cry
being heard, and no sign of the General being discovered, the search was very reluctantly abandoned. Lady
Elphinstone and her daughter on arriving at Teneriffe immediately took passage in a homeward-bound ship, and are
expected to arrive at Plymouth early next week.
"The Queen, an official announcement says, received yesterday, with profound grief, the terrible news of the
untimely death of Sir Howard Elphinstone. Sir Howard enjoyed Her Majesty's entire confidence, esteem, and friend-
ship for 31 years. He had been selected by the Prince Consort to be governor to His Royal Highness the Duke of
Connaught when he [the Duke] was only eight and a half years old. The Queen, and still more the Duke of
Connaught, have lost a dear, valued and most devoted friend, to whom the latter could always turn for wise advice
and counsel."
Sir Russell England  [Kt Bach 1965]
Sir Russell was a leading politician and business man in Botswana. According to the "Historical Dictionary of Botswana,"
he was "a leading white politician, rancher and business man. He served as Chair of the Joint Advisory Council and
European Advisory Council during the 1950s and as a member of the Legislative Council from 1961-1964. England played
a significant role in reconciling white and African interests during the transition to Independence. He was knighted in 1965.
A slightly shadowy figure, he was murdered in 1970 in highly unusual circumstances."
England lived at Woodhall Farm near Lobatse, Botswana, a small town close to the border with South Africa, about 70 km
south of Botswana's capital of Gaborone. Here he was murdered in January 1970 by two young men - 20-year-old Koos
Ockhuizen and 19-year-old Wilson Banda. At their subsequent trial, both of the accused were convicted and sentenced
to death. They appealed their sentences, and the following information regarding their appeal is taken from the Botswana
Law Reports.
"The two Appellants were tried by Dendy Young, C.J., sitting with assessors, on a charge of having murdered Sir Russell
England at Woodhall Farm, Lobatse, on the night of the 12th January, 1970. They pleaded not guilty, but were convicted
and, no extenuating circumstances being found, were sentenced to death. There was an additional count of robbery, on
which they were also convicted, though, in view of their conviction on the murder count, no sentence for the robbery was
imposed. It is not necessary to deal further with the second count. The appeal is brought on the ground that the case
against the Appellants having been based on circumstantial evidence, it was not proved that the circumstances left no
reasonable possibility that the Appellants had not caused the death of the deceased. For brevity's sake, the first Appellant
will in this judgement be referred to as Koos, and the second as Wilson. It is not in dispute that on the night in question
the deceased was alone in his house on Woodhall Farm when he was assaulted by one or more persons who inflicted upon
him a dozen or more lacerations on the upper part of his body. His lungs were stabbed and perforated and he bled profusely
from his wounds. Two of his ribs were fractured, apparently under an exterior stab wound. Death was found to have been
due to loss of blood from the totality of his wounds. The deceased was apparently on the point of going to bed when he
was attacked. His naked body was found by his domestic servant the next morning. It was lying partly on the bed with his
feet on the floor next to the bed.
"The learned Chief Justice considered that it was impossible to say for certain what exactly happened at the time of the
killing, and especially because of the presence of blood on the floor near the telephone in the dining room, this view is
clearly correct. But in the circumstances it is not important. The fact that the deceased was murdered was fully estab-
blished and the question that had then to be decided was whether the Appellants were, beyond reasonable doubt, the
killers. They gave evidence that shortly before the murder they had come from Mafeking in the Republic of South Africa
and had been staying with the parents of Koos at a place referred to as No. 23 Maokaneng, in or near Lobatse. They had
exhausted their money and, requiring some to enable them to return to Mafeking, had decided to steal it and had planned
to get it at the dwelling of the deceased. According to them they had no intention to kill the deceased and did not in fact
do so. Nor were they expecting to have to use violence towards him preparatory to taking his property; they said that
they carried no weapons. Had he resisted, they would merely have restrained him sufficiently to effect their object. As he
was an old man, this was not expected to require much force. On the night of the 12th January about 9 p.m. they said
they approached the deceased's house and when they were near the gate a car dashed out from the yard of the farm at
a considerable speed and disappeared. Wilson said he could see the letters TJ on the number plate. Koos said he could see
TJ37, followed by other figures, and he recognized it as a six cylinder Zephyr car. He could see three persons in it, in dark
clothing. The car passed them at a distance of about 12 paces. They then proceeded to the house and, finding the
kitchen door open, entered by it. Then they heard a hard breathing, gurgling sound from somewhere in the house. They
went from the kitchen through the dining room to the deceased's bedroom where they saw his body on the floor next to
the bed. At that stage he seemed to be dead, having apparently expired just after they heard his final gurglings while they
were in the kitchen. Together they lifted him partly on to the bed and, without investigating whether he might still
glimmerings of life or taking steps to summon assistance, they proceeded to ransack the house and take a large variety of
articles, mostly clothes. They said that they were not shocked at the sight of the dead body. In the yard under a tree
was the deceased's Toyoto truck, the keys to which were stated by a witness to be in the kitchen. Having put the stolen
goods into two of the deceased's suitcases, the Appellants packed them into the truck and drove off. Their finger prints
were found on two bottles of liquor found in a cupboard next to the deceased's bed, but they denied that they drank any
of the liquor. They had consumed liquor some time before they reached the house, Koos, at least, in order to bolster up
his courage, but they drank none from the deceased's bottles.
"After stopping at a place near Lobatse to pick up a woman friend of Koos's, who gave evidence for the State, they drove
down the road to Mafeking, and then diverged towards the frontier where the two republics are separated by a double
wire fence. They charged through the fence and were then stopped by veterinary border guard officers. Wilson ran off
and was arrested the next day, but Koos and the woman were handed over to a Major of the South African Police who
arrested them and got in touch with the Botswana Police, to whom the prisoners and the truck with its contents were
delivered. The South African Police got in touch with the Botswana Police, to whom the prisoners and the truck with its
contents were delivered. The South African Police Major deposed to having found under the driver's seat of the Toyoto
truck a home-made knife, which was produced at the trial. When exactly the knife was found does not appear from the
evidence, but it must have been between the arrest of Koos and the handing over of the prisoners and the truck to the
Botswana Police. The knife had blood stains on it, which were proved by expert evidence to have consisted of the blood
of a primate. In the circumstances, there could be no doubt that it was human blood. A State witness named Naledi
deposed to having lived at No. 23 Maokaneng, the place mentioned above, and to having seen the knife exhibited to the
court in the house as part of the household cutlery, up to the 11th January, 1970, when she noticed that it was missing.
The Appellants were staying at the same address shortly before the murder. When exactly they left is not clearly shown
by the evidence, but it may well have been soon after Naledi last saw the knife at the house. The two Appellants denied
ever having seen the knife before it was produced at the preparatory examination. It was suggested that Naledi was
mixing the exhibit up with another rather bent knife that was among the household cutlery at No. 23. But her powers
of correct observation were checked by an identification test in which she picked out the exhibit from five similar knives
as being the one which was in the house and had disappeared. The learned Chief Justice accepted her evidence and no
good reason was advanced for disagreeing with that conclusion. In regard to the evidence of Major van der Hoven, it was
suggested in the Appellants' Heads of Argument that this might have been the result of a planting by the police of the
knife under the seat of the truck. This far-fetched suggestion could not possibly be sustained. It was not alleged that
the Major himself was responsible for the suggested planting, but when he discovered the knife no member of the
Botswana Police had had anything to do with the truck or could possibly have foreseen the vital importance of the knife
in the case. The learned Chief Justice was, in our view, entirely justified in accepting the evidence of Major van der Hoven
and in finding that the knife which Naledi knew so well was in fact found by the Major in a blood-stained condition under
the driver's seat of the truck.
"There were other elements of probability which were dealt with by the learned Chief Justice in his very careful judgement. He
found the story of the Zephyr car to be false on its own demerits. He also accepted the evidence of two State witnesses who
claimed to have seen the two Appellants with sticks near the deceased's house on the afternoon before the murder. He dealt
with the element of surprising coincidence involved in the Appellant's version of their feloniously planned arrival just at the very
moment when the Zephyr containing the suggested murderers was about to rush away from the deceased's home. The claim of
the Appellants to have found the old, dying or dead man, and to have treated this with cold indifference, also carries with it a
high degree of improbability. But it is unnecessary to enter into these factors in detail, for the finding of the blood-stained knife
under the seat is decisive against the Appellants. It could not on any version have found its way there, save by being put there
by one or other of the Appellants. That was a very stupid thing to do, but the learned Chief Justice took that element into
consideration and rightly held that it did not create a reasonable doubt as to the fact that the knife was so deposited.  No
suggestion was advanced by or on behalf of the Appellants that it could not be affirmed with sufficient confidence which of the
two, Koos or Wilson, did the stabbing, which might well have been done by only one of them. We have, however, taken into
consideration the possibility that the principle of common purpose might not be applicable. A number of cases of weighty
authority have dealt with the question where several people have engaged together in enterprises resulting in another's death.
We have considered these cases, but do not deem it necessary to discuss them in detail. Knowledge of the possession of a
lethal weapon by a companion in crime is of first importance, but such knowledge may be gained in various ways. In the present
case, the stabbing of the deceased must have lasted some time and, in view of the blood-marks in both rooms, may well have
happened in the dining-room as well as in the bedroom. When the use of a dangerous weapon is thus spread over a period,
participants in a crime not itself necessarily dangerous may properly be found responsible for an ensuing death if they have
continued to co-operate with the wielder of the weapon in the carrying out of their ultimate purposes. In the present case the
two Appellants were working in the closest collaboration throughout and there is not the slightest reason for holding that the
stabbing might have been the independent act of one only for which the other was not responsible. Their appeals against the
convictions must accordingly be dismissed.
"It was not propounded in the Appellants' Heads of Argument that the trial court should have found extenuating
circumstances and imposed a sentence other than death. Such an argument, based on the consumption of liquor by the
Appellants, was advanced after conviction at the trial and rejected. Before this Court it was not repeated on that ground.
But the ages of the Appellants was a fact raised by this Court itself. Koos' age was given in the indictment as 20 and of
Wilson as 19. The trial Judge did not appear to have reached any conclusion that these ages were otherwise than approx-
imately correct. The Appellants personally present during the hearing of the appeal and there appears to be nothing to
establish that the ages stated are otherwise than approximately correct. This Court raised the question whether the youth
of the Appellants ought to be taken into account in deciding whether or not extenuating circumstances were present,
despite the fact that the point was not raised by or on behalf of the Appellants, either on appeal or at the trial. At the
trial, after the verdict of guilty of murder was entered, the learned Judge asked Counsel for the State whether he wished
to lead evidence on the issue of extenuating circumstances, to which he received the reply: "Only to prove certain
previous convictions". Thereupon certain previous convictions were proved against each of the Appellants. Those proved
against Koos included a number of convictions for theft, one of common assault and one of burglary; in respect of the
latter he was sentenced to two years' imprisonment on 21st April, 1967. Wilson has three previous convictions, all in 1969;
two for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and one for theft. In respect of the first assault he was sentenced
to five cuts with a light cane, and in respect of the second to a fine of R30 or 60 days' imprisonment. For the theft he was
sentenced to two months' imprisonment. In holding that no extenuating circumstances were present, the learned Judge
made no reference at all to the previous convictions of either of the Appellants, and we think that it is correct to say that
they were in no-wise taken into account by him in forming the opinion that consumption of alcohol by the Appellants did
not constitute extenuating circumstances and, accordingly, that the present case is distinguishable from that of Rex. v.
Owen, 1957 (1) SA 458 (AD).
"No appeal has been brought against sentence, but we propose to proceed as if the sentences were appealed against as well
as the convictions, that, accordingly, the provisions of Section 4(3) of the Court of Appeal Proclamation apply, and that this
Court is entitled to substitute some other sentences if it should itself be of opinion that this is warranted. After giving due
consideration to the circumstances in which this murder was committed to what was said in The State v. Lesedi Mothibamela
as regards this Court's power of interference into a finding that there are no extenuating circumstances, and to what was said
in the case of S. v. Mohlabane about the propriety of taking youth into account in fixing punishment, we have come to the
that there are no extenuating circumstances which would warrant our holding that there should be any other than the death
sentence in the case of either Appellant. The appeals are dismissed."
Following the rejection of their appeals, Ockhuizen and Banda were executed on 8 August 1970.
Sir James Malcolm Monteath Erskine  [Kt Bach 1929]
An exciting evening in the life of Sir James was described in the Gloucester "Citizen" of 4 April 1931:-
'Burglars walked into the bedroom of Sir James Erskine, former M.P. for St. George's Division of Westminster, late last night,
and were pluckily challenged by Sir James, who although ill, sprang up in bed and so alarmed the intruders that they fled,
taking with them only a few of the things which they had collected.
The burglary was at Sir James's house in Eccleston-square, and it is thought three men took part in the raid. They flung
their weight against both kitchen doors, smashing them open, and ransacked a number of rooms before inadvertently
entering Sir James's room and awakening him.
'Lady Erskine described the burglary to a reporter to-day. "Two of the thieves were seen," she said, "and it is thought
there may have been a third. They forced the outer and inner doors of the kitchen, both of which were locked and bolted,
and despite the growls of the bulldog, went upstairs and proceeded to ransack the dining room, sitting room and drawing-
room, being careful to draw all the curtains first.
"One of Sir James's sons had just gone to bed, and was sleeping in a back room on the ground floor. Next the thieves
forced open and ransacked every dispatch box, desk, and drawer that they came across, and collected a lot of 'loot' ready
to remove it. Then one of them went upstairs to the second floor and walked right into Sir James's bedroom. Sir James,
who was ill, sat up quickly in bed, and cried 'What do you want?' whereupon the man hastily closed the door, and called
out to his mate, and they both ran from the house and vanished.
"I ran downstairs shortly after they had left Sir James's room, and saw two of the men, but I did not see the third man.
Very little was taken as the men were disturbed, but among the things they did take was a large antique horse pistol, and
an heirloom which belonged to the Countess of Kellie, an ancestress of Sir James Erskine. They also took a latch-key, so
possibly they will call again.
"We were all awake, and heard the noise, but you know what traffic noises are like, and we did not attach any import-
ance to it. The men must have smashed open both kitchen doors, by throwing their full weight against them. During their
stay they paid a visit to the larder which they left in a frightful mess."
Sir James Alfred Ewing  [KCB 1911]

This biography of Sir James Alfred Ewing appeared in the March 1966 issue of the monthly Australian magazine "Parade":-

'On August 3, 1916, when World War I was in its most desperate stage, Sir Roger Casement was hanged in London for
treason just three months after he had landed in Ireland from a German submarine. But whether he went to Ireland to
spark off the rebellion which eventually led the formation of the Republic or to prevent it on the ground that it could not
succeed is still in dispute. Before the war Casement, a brave but unfortunate man, served as British consul at Lourenco
Marques, Para and Rio de Janiero, earning a knighthood and international honours for his humanitarian work in exposing
the cruelty with which the rubber planters treated the native population. Retiring from the consular service in 1913, he
devoted himself to the cause of Irish nationalism. In 1916 he was in Germany raising an Irish brigade to fight against
Britain.

'Casement was probably aware that spies kept the British government apprised of his actions, but he had no idea that
intercepted German radio signals were being decoded and read in London, and that the Admiralty knew exactly when he
left Berlin for Wilhelmshaven and when he embarked on the fatal submarine voyage which led him to the gallows. Arrested
soon after landing on the beach at Tralee, Casement was taken to London before he could either join the rising or prevent
it. The 20,000 old Russian rifles which were Germany's only contribution to the Irish cause went to the bottom in the
steamer Aud.
'The radio messages responsible for sending Casement to his death were deciphered by the greatest code-cracker of all
time, a dapper 61-year-old Scottish professor of engineering known to the world as Sir Alfred Ewing and to the Admiralty
as the Man in Room 40. Professor Ewing had long figured on the Admiralty payroll as Director of Naval Education, but
during the war he became a figure of mystery. In later years, when his exploits as a code breaker became known,
pressmen dubbed him the Navy's Peeping Tom and he became of the legends of World War I.
'The son of a Presbyterian clergyman, Alfred Ewing was born in Dundee in 1855. He, too, was intended for the church, but
in 1867 the British Association for the Advancement of Science held its annual congress in Dundee and decided the course
of his life. Although only 12 years old he attended as many lectures as possible and became so fascinated he decided to
become an engineer. Four years later, Ewing won a scholarship to Edinburgh University.

'While an engineering student he read The Gold Bug, the famous story in which the bizarre American literary genius, Edgar
Allan Poe, first introduced the cryptogram into fiction. In this tale, written in 1843, an investigator locates a buried
treasure by working out an elaborate cipher by methods which eventually became the foundation of decoding. Ewing's
interest was aroused so much that devising and deciphering cryptograms became one of his hobbies.

'At that time Scottish university students studied for six months then spent the rest of the year working to pay their way.
Ewing's engineering ability made such an impact that he was recommended to the Western Telegraph Company and spent
his long vacations either in the company's London works or testing and repairing submarine cables in Argentina, Uruguay
and Brazil. Graduating as a doctor of science he became a lecturer in mathematics at the Watt Institute, Dundee. But this
phase of his career did not last long. In 1898 an emissary of the Japanese Government visited Scotland to engage a
professor of mechanical engineering and thermodynamics for the University of Tokyo. Selected from a strong field of
candidates, Ewing arrived in Japan the following year to find the country in the first throes of modernisation. While in
Japan, he made revolutionary improvements in the seismograph, the instrument used for detecting and measuring earth
tremors. In 1879 he produced the first continuous record of an earthquake ever made.

'Ewing returned home from Japan in 1883 to become the first professor of engineering at the newly established University
of Dundee. Elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1887, he was appointed professor of mechanical engineering at
Cambridge University three years later. As Ewing was not a Cambridge man, his appointment was not popular there. It was
considered scarcely fitting that such things as steam engines, electric motors, dynamos, lathes and machinery should be
introduced into a university which for centuries had been regarded as a stronghold of languages, the classics and pure
mathematics. One old don plaintively remarked that the fellow from Dundee was turning the place into a technical school.
Ewing had many a tussle with the professor of theology, who asserted that the hum of a dynamo 300 yards away disturb-
ed the peace of his lecture room, while the professor of medieval languages complained that his students could not
concentrate with so many greasy youths in overalls roaming about the colleges.

'In a few years the unperturbed Ewing made Cambridge the most famous school of engineering in England. Among his
students was the Honourable C.S. Rolls, originator of the Rolls-Royce car. Rolls brought all the early models of his engines
to Cambridge for Ewing's criticism. When Sir Charles Parsons invented the steam turbine, Ewing was the first engineer to
realise its potentialities. He was responsible for installing the world's first turbo-electric generator at Cambridge, and
assisted Parsons to build the celebrated "Turbinia," the first turbine-driven vessel in history. The Scotsman's renown
spread into unexpected places. On one occasion he received a letter addressed to the Perfesser of Marchanism and
Appleide Merchanics. Stating that he intended going into the same business as Harry Houdini, the writer asked Ewing to
supply the formula for the metal used in the fetters from which the Handcuff King so readily extricated himself.
'In 1902, when the dynamic Admiral Sir John Fisher became First Sea Lord of the Admiralty, he decided that the entire
system of training was 40 years out of date. Although the navy had furled its last sails generations before, young officers
and ratings were still being taught on principles laid down by old salts who scarcely realised that modern warships moved
steam and electricity. Ordering that the training be completely reorganised and placed under the control of the most noted
all-round engineer of the day, Fisher pleaded with Ewing to take the job. Conservative veterans protested at a civilian
Cambridge professor being appointed to such a position. But, although retired admirals lamented that the navy was going
to the dogs, there was no arguing with the grim and forceful "Jacky" Fisher.

'With Fisher's powerful support, Ewing completely altered naval training as it was known at the time. During the 12 crucial
years before World War I, the antiquated training ships went out of business. Naval colleges, gunnery, engineering,
torpedo and wireless telegraph schools were established, and sailors were no longer judged by their ability to tie knots and
climb rope ladders. By 1914, the navy had a strong leavening of an entirely new type of personnel. Old sea dogs scornfully
referred to these seagoing technicians as bell-bottomed chauffeurs, but they were exactly what Fisher wanted.

'The outbreak of war brought Ewing's work to an abrupt halt. August 4, 1914, saw the colleges he had established
deserted. Ewing, now 59, felt that he was no longer any use to the navy. The next day, however, his friend Admiral
[Sir Henry] Oliver, director of naval intelligence, brought him some enemy radio signals which had been picked up by a
listening post. Knowing Ewing's interests in ciphers, Oliver asked if he could unravel them. In a few hours, the job was
done. Thereupon the delighted Oliver ordered that all intercepted messages should be sent straight to Ewing's office in
Room 40. Throwing himself into this new job with enthusiasm, the Scottish professor built up the most motley team of
experts ever known at the Admiralty. It comprised schoolmasters, authors, peers, chemists, clergymen, actors - anyone,
indeed, who spoke a foreign language, preferably German, had a knowledge of ciphers and a passion for solving abstruse
puzzles.

'Their work was aided by an extraordinary piece of luck. During the fourth week of the war, the German light cruiser
Magdeburg, which was scouting in the Baltic, ran aground on Odensholm Island and was destroyed by the Russian vessels
Pallada and Bogatuir. Among the bodies washed ashore was that of a seaman who was found clutching the German naval
code-book in a death-grip. This momentous discovery, kept secret until long after the war ended, had far-reaching and
disastrous effects on German naval operations. Taken to England by a Russian officer the code enabled the team in Room
40 to decipher German signals and gain advance knowledge of the movements of enemy ships.
'One result was that the German squadron which slipped out into the North Sea at the end of January 1915 was inter-
cepted by Admiral Beatty's battle cruisers and defeated it in the historic Battle of the Dogger Bank with the loss of the
gigantic battleship Blucher. German naval authorities had no idea how their plans had leaked out. Even the British admirals
believed they hade received their orders in consequence of some brilliant espionage work.

'The capture of the Magdeburg's book gave Ewing the clue to principles on which the Germans constructed their ciphers,
but as Room 40 sometimes had to deal with more 2000 messages a day, and the German and Austrian codes were changed
frequently in an effort to baffle the Allies, almost insoluble problems cropped up continually. Although often able to
translate a signal in a few minutes, there were many occasions when days of intense study were required to make its
meaning clear.

'As the war progressed, the team in Room 40 could read messages from German agents in North and South America, Spain,
Greece, Bulgaria and Turkey. It was Room 40 which first learned of the German attempt to launch Mexico into war against
the United States. As a reward for creating a diversion which might keep America out of the conflict in Europe, the
Mexicans were to be given Texas, Arizona and New Mexico. The offer seemed so fantastic that President Woodrow Wilson
and his chief colleagues had to be let into the secret of Room 40 before they could believe it. The leaking of this informat-
ion had a catastrophic effect on German fortunes, as it was one of the factors which ultimately brought the United States
into the war.
'After the war, Ewing became chancellor of Edinburgh University, a post he held until his retirement in 1929. But retirement
was a meaningless word to the man in Room 40. He was busy finishing a book on thermodynamics when death caught up
with him in 1935 at the age of 80.'

Sir Antony George Anson Fisher  [nominated Kt Bach 1988, but not invested]
Fisher's name appears on the list of intended Knights Bachelor in the 1988 Queen's Birthday Honours List. Fisher, who
received his knighthood for 'political and public service,' died shortly thereafter, before he could be invested as a Knight.
Consequently, the London Gazette of 10 Jul 1989 [issue 51804, page 8039] contained a notice which stated that "By
Royal Warrant bearing date 23rd August 1988, Her Majesty The Queen has been graciously pleased to ordain and declare
that Dorian Dodge Fisher, widow of Antony George Anson Fisher, deceased, shall have, hold and enjoy the same style,
title, rank and precedence to which she would have been entitled had her husband survived and received from Her Majesty
the title and dignity of a Knight Bachelor.
