Sir Robert Bellew Adams VC [KCB 1912]
Adams entered the Indian Army in 1876, and by 1896 had reached the rank of Major and brevet Lieutenant-Colonel "in
recognition of his services during the operations of the Chitral Relief Force, 1895."
In 1897, his regiment (the Corps of Guides) took part in the Tirah Campaign, an Indian frontier war which took place in a
mountainous tract of country in what is now Pakistan.
During this campaign, Adams took part in an action for which he was subsequently awarded the Victoria Cross. The
citation appeared in the London Gazette of 9 Nov 1897 (issue 26908, page 6143):-
"During the fighting at Nawa Kili, in Upper Swat, on the 17th August, 1897, Lieutenant-Colonel R.B. Adams proceeded with
Lieutenants H[ector] L[achlan] S[tewart] MacLean and Viscount Fincastle [later the 8th Earl of Dunmore], and five men
of the Guides, under a very heavy and close fire, to the rescue of Lieutenant R.T. Greaves, Lancashire Fusiliers, who was
lying disabled by a bullet wound and surrounded by the enemies' swordsmen. In bringing him under cover he (Lieutenant
Greaves) was struck by a bullet and killed - Lieutenant MacLean was mortally wounded - whilst the horses of Lieutenant-
Colonel Adams and Lieutenant Viscount Fincastle were shot, as well as two troop horses."
Adams and Fincastle were awarded the Victoria Cross. At that time the Victoria Cross was not granted posthumously. This
policy was subsequently changed and MacLean was granted a posthumous VC in 1907 (London Gazette, issue 27986,
page 325).
Adams was given the command of the Guides in 1899, and in 1901 was appointed Aide-de-camp to King Edward VII. He
was promoted to Major General in 1906, but poor health caused him to be invalided out of the Army in 1911. He was
knighted in the 1912 King's Birthday Honours.
Sir William Guilford Allen  [nominated Kt Bach 1973]
Allen's name appears in a list of intended knights published in the Supplement of the London Gazette dated 2 June 1973,
but published on 22 May 1973 (issue 45984, page 6474). Over three and a half years later, the London Gazette of 10
February 1977 (issue 47146, page 1879) contained this notice:-
"The Queen has been pleased by Letters Patent under the Great Seal of the Realm bearing date the 8th February 1977,
to confer the honour of Knighthood upon William Guilford Allen, C.B.E. [Her Majesty's approval of this Knighthood was
signified on the 2nd June 1973.]"
Allen had, however, died on 3 January 1977, a month before the Letters Patent passed the Great Seal.
Sir Francis James Anderson  [nominated KBE 1919, but not invested]
Anderson's name appeared in the 1919 King's Birthday Honours List with the citation "for valuable services during the war."
However, he died before he could be invested. Subsequently, the London Gazette (issue 13632, page 2039) contained a
notice dated 8 September 1920 which stated "The King has been pleased, by Warrant under His Majesty's Sign Manual,
bearing the date the 16th ultimo [i.e. 16th August 1920], to ordain and declare that Frances Alice Anderson, widow of
Colonel (temporary Brigadier-General) Francis James Anderson, C.B., late Royal Engineers, shall have, hold and enjoy the
style, title, place and precedence to which she would have been entitled had her husband survived to be invested with
the Insignia of a Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire."
Sir Robert Keith Arbuthnot, 4th baronet  [KCB 1916]
Sir Robert met his death during the Battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916 when his ship, HMS Defence, was struck by two
salvoes from German ships which caused the Defence's magazines to explode, sinking the ship together with all hands,
estimated at 900 men. There were no survivors.
On 3 June 1916 the London Gazette [supplement 29608, page 5553] included Arbuthnot's name in a listing of newly created
Companions of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (CB). Shortly thereafter, a notice in the Edinburgh Gazette stated
that this appointment had been antedated to 30 May 1916 [issue 12950, page 1070].
Finally, the London Gazette of 15 September 1916 [supplement 29751, page 9070] includes the following notice:-
"The King has been graciously pleased to approve of the posthumous honour of Knights Commanderships of the Most
Honourable Order of the Bath being conferred on the late Rear-Admiral Sir Robert Keith Arbuthnot, Bart, C.B., M.V.O., and
the late Rear-Admiral the Hon. Horace Lambert Hood, C.B., M.V.O., D.S.O. [qv], who were killed in action on the 31st May,
1916, in recognition of their services mentioned in the Commander-in-Chief's despatch of 24th June, 1916."
Sir Cecil Hamilton Armitage  [KBE 1926]
The following [edited] report appeared in "The Cheltenham Chronicle and Gloucestershire Graphic" of 18 March 1933:-
"Sir Cecil Hamilton Armitage K.B.E., C.M.G., D.S.O., who for the last three years has been living at Rendcombe Manor
Cottage, Rendcombe [about 5 miles north of Cirencester in the Cotswolds], was found shot dead on Friday.
"Sir Cecil had a six-chambered revolver in his right hand and a bullet wound in his right temple.
"Sir Cecil, who was born in 1869, served with the South Wales Borderers in the Ashanti Campaign. In 1900 he was Acting
Resident during the siege of Kumasi, and received the D.S.O. and clasp. He was Chief Commissioner, Northern Territories,
Gold Coast [now Ghana] from 1910 to 1920, and Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Gambia 1921-1927. He wrote a
book on the Ashanti Campaign of 1900.
"Sir Cecil Armitage was concerned with Sir Frederick Hodgson, the Governor of the Gold Coast, in the search for the Golden
Stool, though neither understood at the time that it represented more than the throne of the kings of Ashanti, whereas it
symbolised the soul of the nation.
"After taking part in the 1895-96 campaign under Sir Francis Scott, which ended in the deposition of King Prempeh, he was
chosen by Sir Frederick Hodgson, the newly appointed Governor of the Gold Coast, to be his private secretary.
"When the Governor determined to pay a State visit to Kumasi, Armitage accompanied him, and he has left a vivid account
in "The Ashanti Campaign of 1900," of Sir Frederick Hodgson's triumphant entry, of the Governor's demand for the Golden
Stool, and of how he (Armitage) was sent with a small party of Hausas to search for the Stool and "Prempeh's Treasure."
Led to the dense forest to a clearing where stood three deserted huts, Armitage was told that underneath the floors of
the huts was what he sought. The search was thorough but in vain; on the way back the party was attacked by the
Ashanti and Armitage was wounded and with great difficulty fought his way to Kumasi. [The stool was not found
until 1921].
"Shortly afterwards, Kumasi was besieged. Armitage, who received the rank of Acting Commissioner, became chief political
officer; in addition, he took a full share in the fighting, generally in command of the 'levies,' as the Ashanti who had sided
with the British were called. He accompanied the force which in the end cut its way out from Kumasi to the coast. He and
Lady Hodgson were the two people the Ashanti had most wished to capture, for it was believed by them that Lady
Hodgson was a niece of Queen Victoria and that Armitage was Lady Hodgson's son.
"In 1901 Armitage returned to Ashanti - now annexed to the British dominions - as Commissioner of the Southern Province.
This post he held for nine years, frequently acting also as Chief Commissioner of Ashanti. His knowledge of and sympathy
with the Ashanti was not the least of the factors which led to the transformation of that people into contented, loyal and
prosperous farmers and traders. In 1910 came promotion to the Chief Commissionership of the Northern Territories, which
he held for ten years, until in 1921 he was made Governor of the Gambia.
"Sir Cecil was in his youth a protégé of Florence Nightingale, and it was through her instrumentality that he obtained his
first appointment in Africa in a Coastal Constabulary. She maintained a friendly interest in his career up to the time of her
death.
At the subsequent inquest......"Captain Albert Borlese Armitage R.N. said Sir Cecil was his brother. He was 64 years of age,
and so far as he knew he had no financial worries, nor had he suffered from any fits of depression. He had malaria and
other ailments while in the Tropics, but he had a wonderful constitution, and enjoyed good health.
"Robert Kenneth Hudson, the butler, said he called Sir Cecil at 7.20 a.m. He appeared to be a bit vacant on the morning of
the tragedy, and complained of headache. About 9 o'clock his master rang the bedroom bell, and he took him a whisky and
soda and biscuits. He saw Sir Cecil about noon walking up the drive towards the gate, and did not see him alive again.
At 1.30, when Sir Cecil did not come to lunch, he sent a boy to see where he was, and the boy came back and said Sir
Cecil had fallen down. He went to the garage with Curtis, the chauffeur, and there saw Sir Cecil lying face downwards.
"George Ernest Gegg, employed at Rendcome Manor, said at 1.45 p.m. on Friday he was chopping wood in a shed near
Rendcombe Manor when he heard the report of a firearm. The shot seemed to come from a garage. He went to the door
of the shed and looked out. He saw Sir Cecil looking up at a target with a revolver in his hand. He saw no one else, and,
returning to the shed he went on with his work. Shortly after he heard two more shots, which appeared to come from the
same place. He took no further notice, as he had seen Sir Cecil firing at a target. He heard firing on Monday evening of
last week.
"Robert Hy. Mason, a house boy at the Manor Cottage, said that 1.50 p.m. the butler called him and asked him to look
round the house to find his master and tell him lunch was ready. He did so; and upon going to the garage he found Sir
Cecil lying upon the ground, with his head resting upon the top step of the garage. His head was discoloured; and seeing
that something was wrong, he ran back and informed the chauffeur and then the butler.
"William George Curtis, a chauffeur-gardener, said Sir Cecil had been very depressed during the past ten days. He
frequently practised revolver shooting in the garage. He was rather bad and unsteady on his feet, and this was particularly
noticeable when he went out shooting with a double-barrelled gun. People were nervous of him on that account.
"P.C. Lewis described the position in which he found the body. There was a bullet wound in the right temple, and Sir Cecil
was holding a six-chambered revolver in his hand. Four shots had been fired.
"Sir Harry Waters, pathologist at Stroud General Hospital, said the direction of the bullet would denote that the pistol was
not deliberately held to his head. A scratch on the steps pointed toward Sir Cecil having slipped, the muscles tensing and
pressing the trigger as Sir Cecil fell on his right arm.
"The jury retired to inspect the scene of the tragedy, and on their return expressed the view that death was accidental,
and returned a verdict to that effect."
Sir William Arrol  [Kt Bach 1890]
The following biography of Sir William Arrol appeared in the April 1957 issue of the Australian monthly magazine "Parade":-
'A small unhappy urchin of nine by the name of William Arrol crawled in the dirt under the machines of a grim Scottish
cotton mill in 1848 piecing together with nimble fingers the thread whenever it broke. For long hours at that tedious and
tiring pastime he received 2/6 a week. When he was 11 and turning wooden bobbins for cotton he vowed that one day he
would escape from squalid factories and build something that would live. Young William Arrol succeeded beyond his wildest
dreams. When he died he was Sir William. The then greatest bridge in the world across the Tay and the world's most
famous bridge, the Tower Bridge of London, were his lasting monuments.
'William Arrol was born fourth of nine children of Thomas and Agnes Arrol in the village of Houston, Renfrewshire, on Feb-
ruary 13, 1839. He attended the village grammar school till his father, a cotton spinner, was badly burnt in a cotton-mill
fire. With his father out of work through injuries, his mother had to battle to keep the family together. To help her, William
left school at the age of nine and went to work in a cotton-mill at Johnstone.

'Those were the days of child exploitation. For long hours, little William Arrol crawled round in the dirt under the machines
as a thread boy or "piecer" to earn his 2/6 a week contribution to the family income. Though he hated the work in the
dank, gloomy mill, he dare not change. Times were hard and jobs few and far between. When his family moved to Paisley
in 1850, William, then aged 11, made bobbins in the turning shops of Coats' Cotton Thread Manufactory. Then and there
he vowed that one day he would escape from the drudgery of factory life. Even his soaring ambitions did not foresee that
50 years later he would be a director of Coats.
'At 14, William Arrol decided he would be an engineer. First step was apprenticeship to a Paisley blacksmith, Thomas Reid.
Despite the fatigue of long hours of heavy manual work, William Arrol scraped a few pence from his wages each week to
pay for night school. Many years passed before this extra knowledge paid off. When he finished his apprenticeship, Arrol
had to tramp from town to town looking for work. Many a meal he paid for threepences and sixpences earned mending
the traditional Scottish porridge pot.

'At 24, William Arrol got his first break. Laidlaw's, the big engineering works in Glasgow's east end, saw the promise in the
alert young man and made him a foreman at the then substantial wage of £2 a week. When, a year later his wage was
increased to £2/10/-, he felt justified in embarking on what proved to be the first of three ventures into marriage. His bride
was Elizabeth Pattison, daughter of a mechanic at Coats' Mill, Paisley. With her encouragement and his natural thrift, Arrol
saved the princely sum of £84 in the next four years. A friend raised a similar amount. Together they set up in partnership
as boilermakers and girder-makers on the London Road, Glasgow.
'Bad luck dogged the pair. Many of their customers could not pay for orders on delivery. The young firm battled along on
the edge of bankruptcy. Arrol's partner despaired. Soon he wanted to quit. The stubborn young Arrol scraped up another
£84 and bought his partner out. For three heartbreaking years he struggled on against fierce competition from long-
established rivals. Steadily he built up the firm till, in 1871, he got his first big contract.

'The railways made Arrol. Already they had spread in a fine network over England. Now they were intent on pushing into
Scotland, taking advantage of every short cut great bridges and embankments could give them in the hilly terrain. Arrol's
first railway job was a bridge over Edinburgh's Water of Leith. He built so solidly that orders poured in. He was forced to
build new works on a larger site near Glasgow which were to grow into the vast Dalmarnock Ironworks, biggest of their kind
in the United Kingdom. Young Arrol, still only 33, was therefore well set when he won a contract that was to make him
famous. This was for a large bridge over the Clyde at Bothwell for the North British Railway Company.

'Bridge building was then in its infancy. Arrol introduced new techniques that came as a shock to engineers. Earlier
contractors had riveted bridges together piece by piece as the structure straddled out over the stream. Arrol assembled
the girders in sections on land and ferried them out to be lifted into place between piers. This saved time, money and
When his workers struck for higher pay, Arrol invented the first hydraulic riveting machine which enabled him to carry on
with fewer workers and thus break the strike.

'Arrol was, therefore, well established among rising engineers when the North British Railway decided to slash miles off its
routes by building great bridges across the estuaries of the Tay and the Forth. They hired the greatest authority of the
day, Sir Thomas Bouch, to design the bridges and supervise the work. While the Tay Bridge was building, Arrol got the
contract for a suspension bridge across the Forth. He was about to start when catastrophe struck the newly-completed
Tay Bridge which straddled on 85 concrete piers across nearly two miles of water.

'A gale raging down the estuary on the night of Sunday, December 28, 1879, swept away 3000 feet of the bridge - 13
great spans - just as a train set out in the darkness to cross. The train plunged 85 feet to the raging waters below.
Seventy-five people trapped in the carriages plummeted to hideous death. A roar of protest rose from the whole country.
The bridge, it was revealed, had been shoddily built. Cracks, in some cases eight inches wide, split some of the piers.
Rivets were loose. The bridge had rattled crazily whenever a train passed over it. No allowances had been made in design
for such wind pressures as the gale unleashed. Sir Thomas Bouch died of the shock.

'The North British Railway looked for someone to build a sound new bridge that would live down the horror of the old. As
soon as the suggestion was made, a roar of protest rose from the public. Narrow-minded pastors thundered that God had
wrecked the train because the railway defiled the Sabbath by running it. Others thundered that the wreck proved the
Divine will that there should be no bridge over the Tay. Opposition was so great that the railway company had to go to
Parliament before they dared rebuild. Meanwhile they had found the man they wanted in William Arrol. His job was not only
to rebuild the bridge but restore public confidence in the whole British railway system.

'He had two bridges to build now - the bridge over the Tay and the bridge over the Forth. Quietly he experimented with
new plant and appliances. He designed new machinery to mould the steel used in bridges and erect it between piers. He
devised new methods of sinking piers by sending his workmen down in compressed air chambers to excavate the found-
ations. When the new Tay bridge with its 85 spans was completed, it had 23,783 tons of iron, 3588 tons of steel, 37,024
cubic yards of concrete and 26,419 cubic yards of brickwork. Because Arrol was able to salvage some of the girders from
the old bridge, the then greatest bridge in the world cost only £670,000.
Meanwhile Sir Thomas Bouch's plans for a suspension bridge over the Forth were scrapped. Arrol worked on a new design.
In it he followed the little-known cantilever system with three groups of giant vertical columns as the supporting piers.
The two main spans, reaching 361 feet in the air, were each a third of a mile long. Most experts vowed his new-fangled
methods would not succeed. They predicted the Forth bridge would break as surely as the ill-fated first bridge over the
Tay. Arrol drove quietly ahead.

'He had his crowning triumph all March 4. 1890 when the portly Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, drove the last of
nearly eight million rivets into the structure and declared the £2,500,000 Forth bridge open. Though a gale was blowing
and some still thought the bridge unsafe, the Royal party crossed it in a special train to an inaugural luncheon. There, from
the Prince's own lips, William Arrol, one-time piecer's boy, heard that Queen Victoria had honoured him and his achieve-
ments with a knighthood.

'The Tay and the Forth bridges duly stood up to all the buffets of howling Scottish gales. It was natural, therefore, that
when London wanted a great bridge near the Tower which would life from the middle to allow the passage of ships, they
should go to the Scottish genius, Sir William Arrol. Though not his greatest, London's Tower Bridge is undoubtedly his most
famous. The two bascules which life the roadway each weigh 1200 tons. They are worked by hydraulic power.

'From then William Arrol was called in whenever problems confronted bridge builders. He was sent to Parliament to
represent South Ayrshire. He rarely spoke, concentrating mainly as engineering expert on Parliamentary committees that
fostered the greatest period of Britain's industrial expansion. In 1906 he retired with his third wife - two had died - to an
old house and estate he bought near the seashore about a mile south of Ayr. There he collected fine paintings and
hundreds of books. He gave extensively to charity. Dundee and Ayr granted him their freedom. The Worshipful Company of
Blacksmiths of the City of London gave their freedom and livery to the "greatest of them all." He became a director of
Coats. in whose factory he had once made cotton bobbins for a handful of coppers a day.
'Sir William Arrol, one of Britain's greatest bridge builders, died of pneumonia, following influenza, on February 20, 1913,
aged 74. In his will he left £31,000 of his £316,000 to charity.'
Sir Ralph Percy Ashton  [Kt Bach 1911]

The report below of Sir Ralph's death appeared in "The Times" of 29 January 1921:-
'Sir Ralph Ashton, of Beechwood, Reigate, a former Additional Member o the Legislative Council of India, was found dead in
his bathroom yesterday with a bullet wound in the mouth and a rifle by his side. Death must have occurred a short time
before his discovery. Members of the family who were under medical treatment were lying all in adjacent rooms, but no one
appears to have heard the report of the rifle, which contained a spent cartridge.
'Sir Ralph Percy Ashton was born at Darwen in 1860, and was educated at Uppingham and Owens College. A partner of the
firm of Kilburn and Co., engineers, of Calcutta, and one of the leading business men in that city, he was chosen an
Additional Member of the Viceroy's Legislative Council in 1901-2, and had also been a Trustee for the Port of Calcutta, for
the Victoria Memorial of India, and for the Indian Museum. He was president of the Mining and Geological Institute of India
in 1911, in which year he was knighted. Returning to England shortly before the war, he commanded the veterans who
guarded the railway lines in the neighbourhood of Redhill. Sir Ralph Ashton married in 1900 Emma, daughter of the late
Robert F. Rendell, of Staverton, and he leaves one son.'
On 31 January 1921 "The Times" included the following report on the inquest held on Sir Ralph:-
'The Coroner for East Surrey (Mr. F.J. Nightingale) held an inquest on Saturday on the body of Sir Ralph Percy Ashton, 60,
of Beechwood, Reigate, an East Indian merchant, who, as stated in The Times on Saturday, was found dead in his bath-
room on Friday morning with a bullet wound in the mouth and a rifle by his side.
'Lady Ashton said that her husband had been depressed and worried about business, but had not threatened to take his
life. She identified a letter as in Sir Ralph Ashton's handwriting. The letter, which was mainly about business affairs, was
read by the Coroner. It stated:- "My brain has gone west and it is not right to pretend to carry on responsibilities I cannot
discharge," and concluded, "It is a terrible disgrace for one who began life with high ideals."
'Dr. Baker said the Sir Ralph Ashton for the last six weeks had been very depressed and had taken a gloomy view of things
in general, chiefly business matters. He was also in indifferent health, but would not take a complete rest. It was becoming
an obsession with him that the business was not doing well, which was quite erroneous. The witness had insisted on his
either going into a nursing home or for a sea voyage, and his passage had been booked. His mind was unhinged but not to
the extent that he should have been certified. Death was due to the gunshot wound in the head, which could have been
self-inflicted. A verdict of suicide while of unsound mind was returned.'
Sir Herbert Austin  [Kt Bach 1924]
Sir Herbert Austin, who is not to be confused with the Sir Herbert Austin, later Baron Austin, the car manufacturer,
committed suicide in April 1929. The following report appeared in the Dundee "Courier and Advertiser" of 22 April 1929:-
"Sir Herbert Austin, clerk of the Central Criminal Court, was found shot dead in his office at the Old Bailey, London, on
Saturday, with a pistol lying by his side.
"The report of the shot echoed through the deserted corridors of the building, and when his clerk traced it to the room of
Sir Herbert a tragedy without parallel in the history of the court was disclosed.
"Sir Herbert was found in his chair with a wound in the head.
"Dr Westerman, police surgeon, was summoned from Snow Hill, and the body was first taken to St. Bartholomew's Hospital
and later removed to the City of London mortuary, Golden Lane, where the inquest will be held tomorrow.
"At the time of the tragedy the Old Bailey was closed and only Sir Herbert's personal clerk, Mr George Monk, remained on
duty.
"Sir Herbert had stated that he had a luncheon appointment at 1.30, and Mr Monk stayed on and was putting papers in
order in a room further down the corridor when he heard the sound of a shot.
"On the desk was found a note to one of the clerks concerning routine matters to be dealt with.
"Sir Herbert, as was his custom, arrived at the Old Bailey shortly after ten o'clock, and wrote a number of letters. He also
had consultations with his staff, and appeared to be cheerful. Shortly after noon, however, he mentioned that he felt ill,
but after drinking a glass of water he appeared to be his normal self. He had arranged his correspondence, given
instructions to his staff for Monday, and had even filled his fountain-pen before the shot was heard.
"It was thought that Sir Herbert would retire towards the end of the year. He had been associated with the court for 45
years, and had been clerk since 1913, in which year he married Mathilde, daughter of Mr Godefroi Plume, of Strasbourg. Sir
Herbert, who was knighted in 1924, lived at Iverna Gardens, Kensington.
At the subsequent inquest, a verdict of suicide with insufficient evidence to show that state of Sir Herbert's mind was
recorded. Evidence given at the inquest showed that for the last two or three years Sir Herbert had been in intense pain
from headaches and ear-aches, and that he had recently received a severe blow to his head.
Sir William Babtie VC  [KCMG 1916, KCB 1919]
Babtie, then a Major in the Royal Army Medical Corps, won his Victoria Cross on 15 December 1899 at the Battle of Colenso
during the Second Boer War. His citation in the London Gazette (issue 27184, page 2547) reads:-
"At Colenso, on the 15th of December, 1899, the wounded of the 14th and 66th Batteries, Royal Field Artillery, were lying
in an advanced donga [a dry gully, formed by erosion due to running water] close in the rear of the guns without any
Medical Officer to attend to them, and when a message was sent back asking for assistance, Major W. Babtie, R.A.M.C.,
rode up under a heavy rifle fire, his pony being hit three times. When he arrived at the donga, where the wounded were
lying in sheltered corners, he attended to them all, going from place to place exposed to the heavy rifle fire which greeted
anyone who showed himself. Later on in the day, Major Babtie went out with Captain Congreve to bring in Lieutenant
Roberts, who was lying wounded on the veldt. This also was under a heavy fire." [See also the note relating to Sir Walter
Norris Congreve VC on the relevant page].
Babtie remained in the Army Medical Service, eventually rising to the post of Director of Medical Services at the War Office
in 1916.
Sir Andrew Balfour  [KCMG 1930]
After Sir Andrew was found dead, the subsequent inquest was reported in the "Nottingham Evening Post" on 7 December
1931:-
'That he strangled himself while of unsound mind, was the verdict returned at the inquest on Sir Andrew Balfour, aged 57,
the well-known authority on tropical medicine, who was found dead in the grounds of the Cassels Hospital, Penshurst, Kent,
with a cord around his neck.
Sir Andrew was undergoing treatment for a nervous breakdown at the hospital. When his body was found, it was frozen
stiff, having apparently lain in the grounds throughout the night.
'Lady Balfour, the widow, stated that her husband's health latterly had not been good, and following a nervous breakdown
he went to the hospital on January 5th, and was pleased to go. He was very depressed and worried, and suffered badly
from insomnia. She visited her husband once at the hospital, when she found him depressed.
'The Coroner: Did he threaten to do himself any harm? Lady Balfour: Yes, he had fits of extreme depression, during which
he sometimes referred to it. It did not dwell on his mind.
'Mr. Henry Thornton, bacteriologist, of Hall-place, St. Albans, who was staying at the hospital, said that Sir Andrew lunched
with him the day before his death. During the past week he had been more cheerful.
Arthur Albert Izzard, gardener, employed at the hospital, said he had found Sir Andrew's body with a sash cord round the
neck.
'Dr. Thomas Arthur Ross, medical director of the hospital, said that Sir Andrew was sent to him with a report that he had
been suffering from insomnia, and was greatly worried at the possibility of having to resign his post. Sir Andrew was being
given medicine for sleeping, and he was worrying whether he would ever do without it.
'The doctor did not notice any sign of suicidal tendencies, and on the Thursday before his death he told Sir Andrew that
he was reducing his treatment.
'The Coroner expressed his sympathy with the relatives, and said that Sir Andrew was a man bearing a distinguished name,
and who had performed splendid work. He felt very distressed that his end should come in this way.
Sir Andrew, who was the director of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, in his university days won his
Rugby Blue at Cambridge, and later played for Scotland. In addition to many medical works, he was the author of a number
of novels and short stories.'
Sir Frederick Grant Banting  [KBE 1934]
The following biography of Sir Frederick Banting appeared in the August 1958 issue of the monthly Australian magazine
"Parade":-
'Early on the morning of February 21, 1941, a twin-engined military aircraft hurtled just above the snow in the wastes of
Newfoundland.  Suddenly the aircraft spun and crashed into a small hillock. The undercarriage, tail assembly and one wing
shot ahead of the twisted fuselage. The cloud of churned snow cleared. Two lone figures crawled from the wreck. The
pilot sat bleeding in the snow as the other survivor, a major in the Canadian Army, expertly bandaged his injuries. The
major then dragged himself to a bed of broken twigs, covered himself with his greatcoat and died. Next day, newspapers
in both camps of a warring world announced that Sir Frederick Grant Banting, one of mankind's greatest benefactors, was
dead. Just 19 years before, Banting was hailed as the most important medical scientist of the age when, despite the jibes
of some of Canada's top medical authorities, he went ahead with his "fantastic" experiments and discovered insulin.

'Frederick Banting was born on November 4, 1891, on a small farm in the hamlet of Bondhead, about 30 miles north of
Toronto. As a boy he had one ambition - to become a marathon runner like the native Indians who were breaking all
at country fairs. Banting's hero at the turn of the century was the famous Tom Longboat [1887-1949], an Ontario Indian,
whose victories in long distance races filled the sporting pages of world newspapers. For his first race Banting trained night
and day for months. When he ran last to a big field he gave up his athletic ambitions.

'An incident in his early life was mainly responsible for the impetus that drove Banting years later to discover the antidote
to diabetes. One of his closest friends was a young girl from ma neighbouring farm. At school Banting was a plodder and
the girl, Jane, often helped him with his school lessons. When he was 14 young Banting saw his friend die slowly from the
ravages of diabetes. He was told then there was nothing that could be done for the girl except make her death as easy as
possible.

'It was this incident which made Banting decide to become a doctor. He graduated Bachelor of Medicine in December 1916.
He served in France as a medical officer attached to the 13th Field Ambulance. At the Dunard Canal he was wounded and
gassed. Back in England gangrene set in. An English surgeon advised immediate amputation above the elbow. Banting
would have none of it. He took over the supervision of his own treatment. It took months, but he finally saved the arm.

On his return Horne, Banting was attached to the Toronto Hospital, specialising in the treatment of children. He saw
diabetic children, tiny bundles of skin and bone, being carried into the wards. He knew they would never leave their beds
alive. Banting watched helplessly as the children died in comas after a few days or weeks of heart-rending thirst and
constant hunger. The young physician decided to learn all he could about the insidious disease.

'In 1920 Banting took up practice at London, near Toronto. In the library of the University of Western Ontario he began
studying articles on the pancreas. Little was known about this organ, but medical science did know its function was to
prevent diabetes. Why it did was a mystery. One night in October, 1920, as he lay in bed, Banting read an article stating
the glands of the pancreas shrivelled when the ducts were tied. He reasoned it might be possible to make, from the
shrivelled pancreas, an extract containing a mysterious substance - the still unidentified hormone that apparently
controlled the metabolism of blood sugar. Banting couldn't sleep. Finally he got out of bed and wrote in his notebook:
"Ligate the pancreatic ducts of dogs. Wait six to eight weeks for degeneration. Remove the residue and extract."

'Banting didn't know it, but he had practically solved the riddle of centuries. But next day he began to have doubts. Even
if the extract could help diabetic humans, where could he get all the dogs? There were not enough in all dogdom. He
confided with a friend, Dr. W[illiam] Tew. Banting said some bigger animal might be used - steers, for instance. Tew asked
him how he was going to take care of a herd of steers in a laboratory while he was finding out if the idea worked. "I think
you'd better stick to dogs," Tew said.

'Banting discussed his idea with the Professor of Physiology at Ontario University, Professor [Frederick] Miller. Miller told
him to go to the University of Toronto, where the Professor of Physiology was John James Macleod [1876-1935], the
outstanding Canadian authority on diabetes. In November, Banting arrived at Toronto University in an old ramshackle Ford
coupe. He faced Macleod. Then the young nobody outlined his ideas to the famous professor. He asked for 10 dogs and
the services of an assistant for eight weeks. Macleod was almost sneering. He said some of the best medical brains for
years past had tried similar experiments without success. He refused the young doctor any assistance. Banting was a shy
man, but at Christmas he forced himself to approach Macleod again. This time the professor was downright insulting. He
said it was ridiculous to think that this "bumptious neophyte" could accomplish anything in a field where the world's
foremost authorities on diabetes and metabolism had met only failure. The following spring Banting heard Macleod was
going abroad for a holiday. He approached him for the third time. With his laboratory vacant, Macleod had no excuse and
gave Banting its use for eight weeks.

'Banting needed two chemists, for his knowledge of chemistry was scant. Macleod assigned Charles Herbert Best [1899-
1978, Companion of Honour 1971] and E[dward] C[lark] Noble [1900-1978], both of whom had worked on the production
of experimental diabetes. The three men - they were all practically penniless - used the few pounds they had between
them to buy several dogs. The dogs were anaesthetised and the pancreatic ducts tied. "Now," Banting said, "all we have
to do is wait six weeks and see if the mystery juice is isolated." Best began to refer to the substance as "isletin" after the
islets of Langerhans, the little specialised cells in the pancreas which produced it. Banting explained his theory. The dogs
would develop diabetes. He would then grind up the shrivelled pancreas and extract the mystery substance. This would
then be injected back into the dogs' veins and if the animals were cured, diabetes was conquered.
'For six weeks the three scientists fed and played nursemaids to the dogs. They were so short of money that sometimes
meals which were brought to them by friends were fed to the dogs. Early in June Banting operated on the dogs. He almost
with despair. Nothing had happened to the animals for the pancreas were still normal. Best saw it first. The catgut which
had been used to tie the ducts had disintegrated. Banting tried again, but this time he used a special silk thread. During
the six weeks' wait before examining the dogs, funds became so low that Banting sold his beloved Ford. Friends continued
to arrive with food for the three men, but the dogs were fed a large part of it.

'In August Banting operated on one dog. The pancreas was shrivelled. He removed it and ground it. Then he watched the
dog pass through all stages of diabetes until it sank into a coma preceding death. Best and Noble tested the animal's blood.
It was full of sugar. Then Banting injected the extract. For three hours the men waited silently by the inert dog. Banting
had his hand on it when he felt its muscles quiver. The breathing became more regular and the dog opened its eyes. An
hour later it was running about as though nothing had happened. A second blood test showed the blood sugar was at a
normal level.

'Banting realised his discovery was practically useless unless larger quantities of the substance could be obtained. Banting,
Best and Noble went to the local abattoirs. Supplies from the beasts were more than sufficient for their needs. Although
the bitterness remained, Macleod assisted Banting with the full weight of his knowledge. He changed the name of the life-
saving substance to insulin - Latin for island. But humans were still dying of diabetes. Banting believed these cases could
be treated with the substance he was extracting from the abattoir offal.

'On January 11, 1922, with a vial of insulin, Banting went to the Toronto General Hospital. He was immediately led to the
bed of a 14-years-old boy (Leonard Thompson [1908-1935]). The child had but a few days to live. He weighed 65 lb and
was in an advanced stage of emaciation. He was already beginning to slip into a deep coma. Banting injected a small dose
of insulin. Three hours later a blood test was taken and the sugar level had dropped 25 per cent. To make sure insulin had
been responsible for this drop in the blood sugar content, the treatment was stopped. It was only a matter of time before
the full symptoms of diabetes returned. The treatment was recommenced and continued until the child was without any
signs of diabetes.

'A few days later Banting received a call from Dr. Joe Gilchrist, one of his old classmates at Toronto University. A diabetic,
Gilchrist was thin from living on the starvation diet that postponed death for a short time. He was suffering from a raging
thirst and gnawing hunger. Death was imminent. Just two hours after receiving the first insulin injection from Banting,
numerous tests showed no signs of diabetes in Dr. Gilchrist.

'The story of a reprieve from death for diabetics was flashed around the world. All kinds of honours were heaped on Fred
Banting. Jointly, with his arch-enemy Macleod, he received the Nobel Prize for Medicine [the youngest person ever to do
so]. Banting's share came to 40,000 dollars, but he divided it with Best because he believed Best should get equal
recognition. Twelve years later Banting was knighted by King George V.
'Until World War II broke out he presided over the Banting Institute Laboratory at Toronto University. He didn't particularly
like the work and always believed he was a frustrated surgeon. When Germany and Britain declared war the Banting
Institute was turned over to research into aviation medicine.

'On February 20, 1941, Banting was the only passenger on board an army 'plane that secretly left Canada for Britain. He
was, Prime Minister Mackenzie King said later, "proceeding to Britain on a mission of high national and scientific importance."
Major Sir Frederick Banting, it was learned subsequently, was armed with data on new medical knowledge gleaned from top
sources in Canada and the United States. He also had vital information, from his own research, on flying 'blackouts." Early
in the morning of February 21 the 'plane crashed into deep snow near Musgrave Harbor, Newfoundland. The pilot, Captain
Joe Mackey, and Banting were the only survivors to crawl from the wreck. As Mackey lay bleeding in the snow Banting
salvaged a first-aid kit. He bandaged Mackey's injuries, then moved slowly to a heap of twigs. Mackey saw him lie down
and cover himself with his greatcoat. When the ground party came to collect the dead, Banting was still lying on his bed
of twigs, covered snugly by his greatcoat. Reporting his death a leading American newspaper said: "Banting was one of
the most stubborn of men. After he had attended to Mackey's injuries he quietly laid down and stopped being stubborn."
Sir Colin Muir Barber  [KBE 1952]
Barber was a career soldier in the British Army, retiring as a Lieutenant General. He served during World War I in France and
Belgium, being commissioned into the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. Between the wars he continued to serve in the
Army, largely in India, until he was appointed to the General Staff in 1936. Throughout World War II, Barber led various
brigades and divisions, and after the war was over, he was eventually appointed General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of
Scottish Command and Governor of Edinburgh Castle 1952-1955 when he retired.
The reason for this note, however, is that Barber was reputed to be the tallest officer in the British Army during his time of
service. He was 6ft 9in tall and, naturally, was nicknamed "Tiny."
Pratapsinha Gaekwar Sena Khas Khel Shamsher Bahadur, Maharaja Gaekwad of Baroda  [GCIE 1941]
The following biography of the Maharaja of Baroda appeared in the May 1973 issue of the monthly Australian magazine
"Parade":-
"Few people have made such an impression on the English turf just after World War II as did India's stocky, cheerful
Maharajah Sir Pratap Singh, the Gaekwar of Baroda. Arriving in England with his dark, exotic-looking second wife (for whom
many said he had committed bigamy) he set about satisfying an ambition to outdo the Aga Khan in the racing world. In
four years the maharajah spent $2 million on horses and his Newmarket stables were dubbed The Ritz. They had electrically
heated stalls tiled in green and white for his 70-odd horses and the 30 stableboys enjoyed a bedroom each and a cuisine
supposed to be better than a first class hotel.
"But although the Maharajah of Baroda won some important races he never managed to usurp the Aga Khan's position on
the turf and eventually gave up the attempt. He then had to be content with his role as one of the world's most fabulous
playboys - a role he still maintained even when deposed as ruler of one of the most important of the Indian princely States.
Called the last of the big spenders, the maharajah lived on champagne, caviar, curry and cigars and once proudly claimed
that in riches he was second only to the miserly Nizam of Hyderabad.

"The independent State of Baroda came into being early in the 18th century when the warlike Mahratta race subdued the
comparatively peaceful Gujarati people and established a dynasty bearing the name Gaekwar, meaning Protector of Cows.
All went well for the new rulers of the 8000-square-mile State of about three million people until 1874 when the then
Maharajah of Gaekwar was accused of trying to poison a high British official, Colonel [Robert] Phayre [later Sir Robert
Phayre GCB - it was alleged that the poison administered was arsenic and diamond dust]. As a result, the maharajah was
deposed by the viceroy for what was officially described as "gross misconduct."

"Then, as the maharajah had no son, the dowager maharani, a widow of the deposed man's brother and predecessor,
was permitted to choose a suitable heir to the throne. The maharani sent holy men through the State seeking a child for
this role. Their search ended one hot summer day when they found a 10-year-old peasant boy sleeping by the roadside.
Near him was a king cobra, its expanded hood shading the boy's head from the sun. And by ancient Hindu tradition a male
child over whose head a cobra had lifted its hood was destined to be a ruler. So the peasant boy was taken back to the
dowager maharani and raised by her to become the ruler of Baroda as soon as he came of age. [Although a good story,
it is unlikely to be true].

"He duly ruled as Maharajah Sir Sayajirao Gaekwar and turned Baroda, previously notorious for corruption and misgovern-
ment, into a model State. Sir Sayajirao instituted constitutional parliamentary government, compulsory education,
prohibited child marriage and abolished the caste system. When he died on February 6, 1939, he was succeeded by his
grandson, his own son having died in early manhood.
"That grandson, Sir Pratap Singh Gaekwar, was born on June 29, 1908, and sent to a preparatory school at Eastbourne in
England. There the young Indian prince made a habit of swimming in an out-of-bounds pool. When he caught one day the
headmaster cabled the maharajah and asked: "May I beat your grandson?" The answer came back promptly: "Decidedly."
Young Sir Pratap Singh returned to India to finish his education at Poona's Deccan College and became known for his
sporting prowess at cricket, polo, tennis and billiards. He first stepped into the international spotlight in 1929 when, as
Baroda's heir-apparent he married a slim fair-haired 16-year-old kinswoman of the Maharajah of Kolhapur. Ten years later,
in February 1939, his grandfather died and Baroda had a new Maharajah. At the time Sir Pratap Singh was captain of
India's Davis Cup team and had to resign to take up his duties as ruler.

"He inherited an annual income of $5 million and at his coronation rode to the royal temple at the head of 50 richly
caparisoned elephants, followed by solid gold and silver cannons drawn by bullocks. Fireworks flamed and sparkled from the
rooftops, while in the maharajah's palace (a copy of the Versailles Palace) were displayed his other inheritances from his
grandfather. They included the famous $1 million Star of India diamond necklace and a four-yards-square carpet of pearls,
diamonds and rubies woven into a pattern and worth $2 million. As Protector of Cows the maharajah played a sacred role
in Hindu affairs and was entitled to a 21-gun salute. When he appeared on the streets people fell on their knees and made
the traditional gesture of throwing the dust on which he walked into their faces. At first the new maharajah seemed a
model ruler as enlightened as his grandfather. Shunned Untouchables whose mere shadow was considered defiling by high
caste Hindus now found refuge in Baroda. In 1940 the maharajah brought in a new law imposing severe punishments for
the practice of polygamy and forbidding more than one wife for any of his subjects.
"Then, one day in 1942, soon after his wife had borne him her eighth child, the maharajah went to an Indian race meeting.
There he met and fell head over heels in love with the beautiful Sita Devi [1917-1989], daughter of the Maharajah of
Pithapuram, a big Madras landowner. Despite the fact that she was already married, the Baroda ruler was determined to
take her as his second wife - ignoring his own law on polygamy. As a Hindu, Sita Devi could not be divorced. So she calmly
became a Moslem, divorced her husband, changed back to her Hindu religion and married the Gaekwar. This aroused angry
opposition through the State of Baroda with the Prime Minister and an influential section of parliament demanding the
maharajah's abdication.

"He rode out the storm by calmly announcing that as ruler he was above his own laws. So he stayed on the throne, and it
was the Prime Minister who resigned. But the Baroda Parliament still refused to recognise the Princess Sita Devi as
maharani, insisting that the title belonged to the maharajah's first wife. And when his first wife continued to occupy the
principal palace, the maharajah and Sita Devi had to take up residence in a more modest establishment. Then World War II
ended and to escape the discomfort of the inferior palace as well as continued opposition to his polygamous state, the
maharajah and Sita Devi virtually made England their home.

"They moved from one to another of his various residences in England and Europe - as well as taking regular vacations in
Florida, the Bahamas and Monte Carlo - and only rarely returned to Baroda. With Sita Devi accepted away from India as
the maharani, the Gaekwar sent agents round the world seeking out rare gems for her. Yet despite her fabulous jewels
she was perhaps best known for her habit of smoking a dozen cigars a day in a solid gold holder. Glittering with pearls and
diamonds Sita Devi once told reporters in London on returning from the Riviera: "I wouldn't change places with anyone
anywhere. I love being rich."

"Meanwhile, the maharajah was trying to outdo the Aga Khan on the turf and seemed he might make it when one of his
best horses, Sayajirao (named after his grandfather), won the 1947 St. Leger. The Gaekwar paid nearly $60,000 for the
colt at the Newmarket sales (a record price at the time) and his only comment then was: "When I want something I pay
for it."

"Then came India's independence and along with the other princely States, Baroda was incorporated into the new Indian
nation. The Gaekwar of Baroda found his $5 million income suddenly reduced to $400,000 and his position that of a mere
figurehead. But worse was to come. Before long the new Baroda Legislature was condemning his frequent absences and
passed a resolution calling for his abdication in favour of his eldest son. Another resolution asked the Indian Government to
set up an inquiry into alleged "misuse and misappropriation" by the maharajah of some $6 million over the previous two
years. The Gaekwar hotly denied the charges and managed to hang on to his position until April 1951. Then he was
abruptly given a month's notice to quit by the Indian Prime Minister, Pandit Nehru, who claimed that the maharajah was
leader of a move to restore the powers of the princes. And at the end of the month, Nehru installed his son as maharajah
in his place.
"The deposed maharajah returned to virtual exile in Europe. He had lost his $400,000 income but with personal assets of
$18 million in England alone he really had no financial worries. However, reduced circumstances forced him to sell his racing
stables and horses, his private plane and several of his residences. But he was still permitted the courtesy title of
Maharajah Gaekwar and although becoming increasingly pudgy, he still played the role of a dashing pleasure-seeking
playboy. His wife Sita Devi maintained her reputation as one of the world's most luxury-loving women. Refusing to wear
Western clothes she had a wardrobe of 3000 saris, many trimmed with a fortune in mink. "I like to wear mutation mink
with my saris," she once said, "not just the same old brown mink. That gets rather drab."

"Then in 1954 the international set was stunned when the maharajah advertised that he was no longer responsible for his
wife's debts. Sita Devi retaliated with a similar advertisement about his debts and in Paris in 1955 began divorce proceed-
ings against him. Next the couple began publicly disputing the ownership of the jewels she had acquired during the
marriage. The maharajah claimed they were State heirlooms belonging legally to Baroda. His wife then issued this
statement to the Press: "All property, including jewellery in the possession of Her Highness Sita Devi is her private property
and within her free power of disposition."

"Meanwhile, the maharajah's name became linked with a willowy blonde screen actress and model, Virginia Keiley [1918-
1990], with whom he spent vacations in the West Indies and the Channel Islands. In 1956 he returned to India and
secured a divorce. Back in Europe, he admitted his finances were worrying him and lamented to reporters. In 1962 the
maharajah lost his driving licence in England for dangerous driving. A year later his financial situation was such that the
Indian Government agreed to pay him an annual allowance of $34,000. He made news once more with a near scandal in
1965 when a German blonde he employed as secretary was discovered by the Press to be only 15.

"On July 19, 1968, when the Maharajah Gaekwar of Baroda died in London at the age of 60, one obituary referred to him
as "the last of a vanished species".
Sir Sydney Beauchamp  [Kt Bach 1920]
Sir Sydney was killed when he was run over by a bus. The following [edited] report of the subsequent inquest appeared in
the "Daily Telegraph" of 26 November 1921:-
'In the Westminster Coroner's Court yesterday, Mr. Ingilby Oddie held an inquiry in reference to the death of Sir Sydney
Beauchamp, aged 60, a registered medical practitioner, lately of William-street, Knightsbridge, S.W., who was run over and
killed by a motor-'bus in Pall-mall on Tuesday evening.
'Mr. Guy W. Waterlow, of Thurles-court, S.W., identified the deceased as his uncle, who, he said, had good health and
sight, but his hearing was slightly defective. Witness was with his uncle on Tuesday evening, when they were going to the
United University Club. They were going along the north side of Pall-mall, witness being on the deceased's left. They
crossed from the Guards' Memorial to an island, and Sir Sydney placed his hand on witness's arm to prevent witness from
leaving the island. Witness stopped and instinctively looked around to see what traffic was coming south. He then heard
shouting, and saw a man hit by the off-side front wing of a motor-'bus, and realised that it was his uncle. He was knocked
to the ground and a wheel of the 'bus came to a standstill on his chest. The driver had pulled up very quickly. Witness
surmised that his uncle had crossed about 30ft from him, because the 'bus was very close to the kerb. Witness had not
seen the 'bus until a second before it struck Sir Sydney. Witness thought the deceased must have caught sight of the 'bus,
and tried to dodge to save himself. After telling witness to stop, the deceased must have gone straight on.
'Mr. Hastie [for the Beauchamp family] suggested that there was a taxi-cab between the deceased and the motor-'bus,
which would obstruct deceased's view of the 'bus and the driver's view of him. Witness agreed. Mr. Hastie thought that
was what happened. Mr. McDonald [for the bus company] elicited that the motor-'bus was properly lighted. Mr. Hastie
said that there was no suggestion of negligence on the part of the driver.
'Frederick Edwards, the 'bus-driver, said his speed in coming round the bend was about four miles an hour, and, seeing
pedestrians on the refuge, he sounded his hooter. The first thing he saw of the deceased was when he was trying to cling
to the bonnet of the 'bus. Sir Sydney fell, and his front wheel rested on his chest. He was dead when taken out.  Witness
said he had driven for many years, and this was his first accident.
'The coroner said one liked to speak kindly of the dead, but if anyone was to blame he was afraid it was Sir Sydney himself,
who rather recklessly ran a risk that he would not allow his nephew to take. He recorded a verdict of accidental death.'
